We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"As the client had acquired another company some distance away, they were concerned about having a single SAN in one location or the other. StarWind vSAN allowed us to keep a copy of the data local to each site without asking the client to pay for two SANs in addition to the two new servers they needed.""Virtual SAN runs on iSCSI, which is free and easy to configure. It's easy to manage from StarWind's GUI console, and it only required a few extra switch ports.""The virtual tapes can be uploaded to the object storage of your choice with object locking/governance which gives you an extra layer of protection.""Active-active HA provides top performance and redundancy.""This was a great implementation for a small to mid-size business.""The most valuable features are high availability and real-time replication between two servers.""The StarWind VSAN is always up and allows us to move VMS to other nodes for maintenance, without interruption to service.""Being hardware agnostic is a must and definitely scored points for us."

"The replication technology can move data faster than EMC MirrorView and requires less bandwidth. The Storage Virtualization technology is the most mature in the market, outside of IBM’s Storwize (which has a lot of compatibility issues, and EMC’s very expensive VPLEX solution); and it works.""This solution allowed us to move from using standalone systems to having all our data center management in one place.""In our implementations, HDS Storage Virtualization has helped in migrating data with the least amount of downtime, compared to other storage technologies."

More Hitachi Unified Compute Platform HC Series Pros →

"The most valuable feature is the software design storage that really provided a faster, agile, easier to scale up and out storage path.""The most valuable feature is the convergence.""We're trying to move to a much more API-driven management of all of our products, and NetApp's product is, from all the SDS providers we have seen, the most fully-baked API out there.""It allows me to move a VM set and require extra performance. I can easily move them onto it and have it just run.""Our goal with NetApp HCI is to have no single point of failure.""HCI definitely improved how flexible we scale, and our entrance into the cloud. The features are very rich, in terms of both avenues. It's helped us flexibly move and shift our workloads around, back and forth.""The most valuable feature, currently, is the density of the system as hardware. I'm able to leverage the density of the product and remove bigger hardware which requires more space, cooling, and power costs, obviously. There are cost savings, obviously.""Scalability was another thing I was looking at. The solution, by its very nature, is designed to be expandable and flexible, so you don't have to buy performance you don't need today, but you're also not stuck with something you can't expand."

Cons
"There needs to be more visibility on how long the cloud replication will take as there is no current ETA.""Our company was hoping for deduplication and encryption across HCI. That is currently not supported.""We have, in rare cases, received conflicting guidance between different support folks within StarWind.""An update caused a syncing issue and it took over a month to resolve it""Proper training sessions should be included with the licensing.""If it's possible to make a driver/solution that does not make use of the iSCSI targets of Windows, that would be great. I don't know if that's possible, however, it could make the configuration a little easier.""I struggled when bit figuring out how to go about doing the evaluation.""StarWind Command Center's single-pane management solution only works with Hyper-V."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"HDS reaches a ceiling depending on model. The G200 cannot transition to G400, the G400 can transition to G600 but cannot transition to G800, which is the top-end model.""An update to its technology would be good. The G Series has been around for more than five years and HDS seriously needs to ramp up, since the competition has better performance at a lower cost with better features and functionalities. For example, it needs redirect on write Snapshot, preconfigured storage tiering with better IOPS, built-in deduplication technology on hybrid disk, etc.""An area for improvement would be technical support. In the next release, I would like to see more features added to make this a more complete solution."

More Hitachi Unified Compute Platform HC Series Cons →

"It would be nice to have better access to tutorials and a test environment for simulations.""I would like to see a better upgrade process, like the one that ONTAP has.""The administration side of it needs to be improved. We expect an easier interface and a single upgrade for updating the infrastructure.""They could improve the packaging.""I would like for them to fall a little closer to like the VMware release model. The new features and new solutions tend to come from the VMware side. I would like for NetApp to follow along closely with VMware's release schedule.""There's a limitation with a block in the file. That's where I see that it's not very efficient for upgrades and for management.""I would like to have the ability to replicate to multiple sites.""It is easy to install now, but could potentially be even simpler."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

    Information Not Available
  • "This solution saved our organization time (35 percent) and money. We have a hefty group of developers, and if you multiply that by 30 to 35 percent, that is quite a bit of money."
  • "Where we lost nearly 75 percent of our infrastructure due to a malicious attack and were able to recover two and a half hours into it due to the integration, it saved us and all of our customers. Because we were able to recover so fast from the attack, the solution paid for itself right there."
  • "There are the overall infrastructure costs. Even though the initial costing was higher, we calculated for year-to-year for five years. That brought us into a position where we decided, we have to go for HCI rather than having distributor systems."
  • "All the licenses are included when you buy the program."
  • "You still have to pay for the licensing for VMware and Red Hat licenses separately. It's not all inclusive at this point."
  • "This solution reduced our maintenance costs. We were going to have to pay one to two million dollars to put in compute nodes. We are avoiding those costs."
  • "Licenses run on a yearly basis, and there aren't any additional fees other than the standard licensing fee."
  • "The licensing fees are renewed annually."
