A stable and scalable solution with great integration with VMware, but requires a lot of knowledge of Linux and better support
Pros and Cons
  • "The most important feature of Tanzu Mission Control is its integration with the other products, especially with ESX and vSAN. This is a strong part of Tanzu Mission Control. In other solutions, such as OpenShift or Kubernetes, you can find similar features, but they don't have similar integration. With Tanzu Mission Control, you get a total solution with only one provider. You have the integration with the infrastructure, virtualization of networking, and virtualization of storage. You have a natural integration, and you don't have the problem of integrating it with different products or providers. Sometimes, different companies have good integration, but it is not always guaranteed. For example, many years ago, Cisco and VMware were good partners in networking, but when VMware started to sell ESX, the relationship was broken. This is the problem that you can face when you are using solutions from two different companies."
  • "It is not easy to build a solution with containers. It has a graphical user interface, but you need to have a lot of knowledge of Linux and how to work in the command mode. Its support can also be improved. Currently, its biggest disadvantage is that it is a new product, and the clients prefer to go for a solution that has been in the market for a long time. There are not that many people who know this product."

What is our primary use case?

We have clients with different use cases. We have a customer who is a service provider who sells services in the cloud and Kubernetes. Our clients have cloud and on-premises deployments.

What is most valuable?

The most important feature of Tanzu Mission Control is its integration with the other products, especially with ESX and vSAN.

This is the problem that you can face when you are using solutions from two different companies.

What needs improvement?

It is not easy to build a solution with containers. It has a graphical user interface, but you need to have a lot of knowledge of Linux and how to work in the command mode. Its support can also be improved.

Currently, its biggest disadvantage is that it is a new product, and the clients prefer to go for a solution that has been in the market for a long time. There are not that many people who know this product.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with this solution for more than six months. It is quite a new product.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Its stability is good. I didn't find any major problem that broke the solution and impacted the services.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Its scalability is good. I didn't find any issues with its scalability. One of our clients is a big company here, but if you compare it with an American company, it would be considered a small company.

How are customer service and support?

Their support is not good, but it is also not bad. The support is normally outside of America. Sometimes, it is in Europe. There are people with a lot of VMware experience in Europe but not in America. However, VMware is building its support.

How was the initial setup?

Its initial setup is not very easy. When you work with containers, you work in Linux. It has a graphical user interface, but you need to have a lot of knowledge of Linux and working in the command mode. It is not easy to build a solution with containers.

Its implementation takes a long time. It took us 90 days for one customer and 60 days for another customer.

What about the implementation team?

You need to connect it with other parts of the infrastructure. We have ten people who are into networking and storage.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Our clients evaluate other free products. Two of our clients have a strong relationship with VMware. They don't evaluate other products.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate VMware Tanzu Mission Control a seven out of ten.

A multi-tenant platform minus a GUI
Pros and Cons
  • "The multi-tenancy with the VCD is great."
  • "This product doesn't have a GUI. In order to use it properly, I need to connect it to a new GUI or build a GUI to manage it — it's pretty difficult."

What is our primary use case?

We are interested in using this solution as a Container as a Service (CaaS).

What is most valuable?

The multi-tenancy with the VCD is great.

What needs improvement?

This product doesn't have a GUI. In order to use it properly, I need to connect it to a new GUI or build a GUI to manage it — it's pretty difficult.

This solution should come in a suite including other solutions like Grafana and Prometheus.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have only been using this solution for a couple of weeks; I am just testing it out.

How are customer service and technical support?

As we don't have a license, we don't receive customer support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial installation could be easier — it's complex.

What about the implementation team?

I installed this solution by myself.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Currently, I am evaluating Rancher and OpenShift.

What other advice do I have?

At this point in time, I would give this solution a rating of seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Plenty of customization, easy to use, and responsive technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "VMware Tanzu Mission Control has many valuable features, such as ease of use and customization."
  • "The solution could improve by having better integration with other solutions such as HPE."

What is our primary use case?

I use VMware Tanzu Mission Control as a centralized management platform.

What is most valuable?

VMware Tanzu Mission Control has many valuable features, such as ease of use and customization.

The most important feature of VMware Tanzu Mission Control is the integration with vSphere because it allows easy implementation of the solution into the development cycle. Additionally, you can run the containers on the virtual machine in the same cluster.

Many people in organizations need to change the monolithic way that they develop programs. However, with this solution, you are able to integrate both monolithic and virtual machines. The new way is with microservices and people who have worked in the development for a long time it can be difficult to learn the new modern techniques of development.

What needs improvement?

The solution could improve by having better integration with other solutions such as HPE.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using VMware Tanzu Mission Control for approximately one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

VMware Tanzu Mission Control is scalable. You can increase the cluster size with other solutions, such as vSphere. Additionally, if you have a version of the solution that allows integration of cloud services, such as Amazon or Microsoft Azure, you are able to integrate your on-premise clusters.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is very good and has a fast response time. However, the level of support depends on the license contract you have with VMware.

How was the initial setup?

The installation was simple. You need to implement the console with the virtual machines, your Visor, and then you can begin to use and integrate your vCenter with all the VMware environments.

It takes approximately one day for the implementation of the console and another day for the vSphere.

What about the implementation team?

I did the implementation of the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There are different licenses available. You have to upgrade your license if you want to scale the solution more.

What other advice do I have?

I rate VMware Tanzu Mission Control a nine out of ten.

Scalable and stable, but expensive to deploy
Pros and Cons
  • "The most popular feature of VMware Tanzu Mission Control is its graphical user interface for describing network policies on the Service Mesh, which is highly integrable with other tools commonly used in supply chains such as security."
  • "The infrastructure is quite challenging."

What is our primary use case?

Typically, VMware customers who already have a VMware data center and SDDCs in place adopt VMware Tanzu Mission Control to extend their existing infrastructure into Azure or multi-cloud environments and maximize applications. Tanzu Mission Control enables platform teams to centralize Kubernetes operations.

What is most valuable?

The most popular feature of VMware Tanzu Mission Control is its graphical user interface for describing network policies on the Service Mesh, which is highly integrable with other tools commonly used in supply chains such as security. This static, graphical user interface is highly useful.

What needs improvement?

The infrastructure is quite challenging. That reflects the solution's insight. The Tanzu suite could be improved to make it easier for clients to use. People coming from a programming background prefer client tools to be easier to work with and manage.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for over two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I give the stability an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I give the scalability an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

Tanzu's professional technical support team offers responsive service when a client registers for it. However, the community part may not be as helpful when the technical questions get too complex.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is satisfactory. It was straightforward for me to configure, but more complex decisions on the architectures are still quite difficult. There are still some areas of friction, but overall the setup is acceptable.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is only for large or medium size enterprises because it is expensive. This solution is not for startups.

What other advice do I have?

I give the solution a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Amazon Web Services (AWS)
