Top 5
The solution's valuable features include reporting, a management dashboard and file analytics
Pros and Cons
  • "The customer service executives of all Nutanix products are active and responsive."
  • "If they can add an integrated DLP feature, it would be great."

What is our primary use case?

We mainly use the solution for consolidated file servers.

What is most valuable?

The solution's valuable features include reporting, a management dashboard and file analytics. Through the file analytics feature, we can detect any file anomaly.

What needs improvement?

They should integrate additional security with Multi-Factor Authentication. Also, if they can add an integrated DLP feature, it would be great.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the solution for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a very stable solution as it has already inherited the HCI hardware resiliency and high availability of the HCI infrastructure.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution's scalability is a ten as there's no limitation yet regarding its capacity. It automatically expands another VM node if you want to increase capacity. Presently, our organization has around 100-150 users of the solution.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's tech support is very good. The customer service executives of all Nutanix products are active and responsive. It is easy to open a case.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's setup is straightforward. You need to upgrade the installer, and then it follows the wizard. Next, you have to integrate an active directory service, and it's good to go.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you already have a Nutanix HCI environment, add per-terabyte licensing. That would be cheaper than acquiring new Nutanix files. It is expensive otherwise, as it comes with three-tier underlying hardware. I rate the solution's pricing as a seven.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We have compared the solution with LenevoNetApp. They have a unified storage that supports file services and block services. But we found Nutanix's features availing richness of reports and dashboard more promising. We are able to get  dashboard and granular reports on how our data is accessed and used with Nutanix Files Storage compared to traditional unified solutions. Also, in terms of hardware redundancy during deployment, Nutanix Files is much better. In addition, Nutanix Files Storage is deployed on top of the HCI service. That makes the software-defined in terms of protection resiliency. In the case of traditional file storage, if we want to have redundancy and resiliency, we need to buy two appliances and enable them to get that resiliency.

What other advice do I have?

I rate the solution as an eight, with room for improvement.

Improves database performance, integrates well with other products, and has good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "They have well-documented best practices and the interface is good."
  • "The escalation process with technical support could do with some improvement."

What is our primary use case?

Our clients use this solution to achieve better database performance. It allows the system to run quicker and to be more responsive.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the performance and the integration with other products, such as Oracle.

They have well-documented best practices and the interface is good.

What needs improvement?

As you have to go through all of the steps of technical support, it takes longer to get to an escalated level. The escalation process with technical support could do with some improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been familiar with Nutanix Volumes for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's somewhat scalable depending on the circumstances.

If you are trying to scale it to resolve an issue because of the original sizing, that can be a bit more complex. When everything is sized correctly and you are scaling it to add more capacity, then it's quite easy.

How are customer service and technical support?

For most of the issues, technical support is pretty good. For the more complex and ongoing escalated issues, it can be slow to resolve.

They are good but it can drag on a bit.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is quite easy.

Deployment usually takes less than a week. If you take into account testing phases and migration then it takes a few days.

What other advice do I have?

I am a solutions architect and I work for a reseller who implements products for customers. I do a lot of work in backup and recovery. I sell these solutions or I put together a solution architecture for each project.

Overall, it's a good product. The hyper-converged is good, as long as it is sized correctly to fit your workload. Most of the challenges I see with Nutanix are due to the wrong architecture. It needs to be correctly sized. If it is not properly sized then you get poor performance.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of the license is expensive when comparing it to traditional storage.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution because it can give the other Nutanix solutions a block storage service and supports other applications, such as Red Hat and Oracle Database.

I rate Nutanix Volumes a nine out of ten.

Easy to manage, upgrade and do analytics of new data
    Pros and Cons
    • "The solution is stable and extremely easy to calibrate."
    • "The solution should increase its storage capabilities."

What is our primary use case?

We are a distributor of Nutanix Files.

    What is most valuable?

Nutanix Files is a complete solution in the Telco Machine and offers a host of benefits. These include easy management, upgrading and analytics of new data.

    What needs improvement?

The solution should increase its storage capabilities, as it has been required to make use of local data storage and local pockets and magnets.

Also, I have had difficulty with Nutanix Files and with understanding Nutanix AOS.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been dealing with Nutanix Files since it was made available to new customers, for around two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable and extremely easy to calibrate.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and technical support?

While Nutanix Files are good when it comes to providing support, it could be faster.

    How was the initial setup?

I am a distributor and can manage the solution directly with the customer, who is usually a partner. Should the need arise, I can provide advice.

What other advice do I have?

Nutanix Files is a free solution. I believe we have five customers making use of it.

I would recommend the solution to customers who don't have great storage needs.

I rate Nutanix Files as an eight out of ten.

An interface that is simple to use and the redundancy is good
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable features are the interface and support."
    • "The implementation is a little bit complex and should be made easier."

What is our primary use case?

We have clustered our in-house environment and this includes our Nutanix Files server.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the interface and support. It is very simple to use.

    The redundancy is very good.

    What needs improvement?

    The storage could be improved.

The implementation is a little bit complex and should be made easier.

Better analysis capability of the files using the API would be helpful.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Nutanix Files for six months.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Nutanix Files is flexible in terms of being able to scale it. If you are scaling out then you have to expand your file server, but it is an easy process.

We have approximately 300 people who are using data on the Nutanix Files server.

How are customer service and technical support?

I am generally satisfied with the technical support. However, one thing that needs to be improved is that you have to go through the hardware vendor for support in some circumstances.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is a little bit complex. You need to set up your management server, and you also have to do some virtualization. Windows File Server is easier to configure, where you can set it up all at once.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, this is a good product and I recommend it.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.
