What is our primary use case?
The main use cases I'm using HPE GreenLake for File Storage for are configuration and centralized management.
How has it helped my organization?
I've been experimenting with the new version that is coming out, and it has extensive analytics for finding issues and bottlenecks, which works really well.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features of HPE GreenLake for File Storage for my team are the managed switches and access points. We have about 44-45 locations with a combination of equipment. There are locations that have Aruba, and we have Aruba APs everywhere. When it comes to switches, there are sites that have Aruba switches, while other sites have Cisco and Arista. For configuration, HPE GreenLake for File Storage makes it easier to manage compared to other solutions.
When we're having issues with Wi-Fi, we can easily identify what's occurring. We use the UXI devices, which we implemented a couple of months ago. When experiencing Wi-Fi issues, it indicates if it's related to DNS or network connectivity.
The solution's data reduction technology has reduced our data center power cost significantly, though I cannot specify the exact amount.
Regarding the intuitiveness of HPE GreenLake for File Storage and single console, I don't work with the storage directly. We handle configuration, but it's primarily managed by the system admin network side.

OPEX model fuels early data-driven transformation with rapid procurement and supply chain acceleration
Pros and Cons
- "I find the speed and the resiliency of the HPE GreenLake for File Storage to be the most valuable features."
- "The customer service and technical support are a little challenging, as they need to address many gaps in those areas."
What is our primary use case?
My main use case for the HPE GreenLake for File Storage involves running new Chinese block nodes for our non-SAP applications.
What is most valuable?
I find the speed and the resiliency of the HPE GreenLake for File Storage to be the most valuable features. These features have benefited our organization by making us more data-driven early because of our procurement and supply chain, which helps us to do the transactions quickly.
I evaluate the solution's performance for eliminating any front-end cache and data movement between media as good. I would assess the effectiveness of HPE GreenLake for File Storage when it comes to modern data-intensive workloads as not applicable since we haven't used it for that.
The solution's data reduction technology has reduced our data center power costs by approximately 20% to 30%. It is very important for my business that the solution has independent scaling of performance and just capacity for storage systems, as our industry is data-driven, needing TBs of data to be processed.
What needs improvement?
I think HPE GreenLake for File Storage could be improved by working more on the cost-wise aspect since we feel it's quite costly. The customer service and technical support are a little challenging, as they need to address many gaps in those areas.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE GreenLake for File Storage for around a couple of years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution's scaling abilities have affected our operational business positively; we have been building factories quickly, and that's where we get help, enabling us to expand our business.
How are customer service and support?
They need to address many gaps and there's an area of improvement in those areas. I would rate the customer service as a seven because of attentiveness; I don't see great attentiveness when we run into issues.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Prior to adopting HPE GreenLake for File Storage, I was not using another solution to address similar needs; it was a new setup.
How was the initial setup?
Before selecting the HPE GreenLake for File Storage, we tried buying some storage from Brocade, but we didn't feel it was much more useful or the right choice, so we went with the GreenLake one.
What stood out in my evaluation process, both positive and negative, when comparing these options was that it was good. I would describe my experience with deploying HPE GreenLake for File Storage as good.
What was our ROI?
I have seen a return on investment with the HPE GreenLake for File Storage.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with the pricing, setup cost, and licensing is good. We may need to involve more, but we have been comfortable. When we use HPE GreenLake for File Storage, we don't need to buy any one as ours is an OPEX model business, which helps us to do things.
What other advice do I have?
I definitely recommend it; it's an OPEX model, and I would ask anyone wanting an OPEX model to go with the GreenLake storage.
On a scale from one to 10, I would rate HPE GreenLake for File Storage as eight.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Efficient scaling and reliability have enhanced operational capacity and support
Pros and Cons
- "An example of how the features of HPE GreenLake for File Storage have been benefiting my organization is through the reliability and stability we experience, as the engineering team that takes care of it, plus my team that reports up to me, are very comfortable with the technology, which has been reliable, and HPE's support has been fantastic."
- "I would like to see HPE GreenLake for File Storage improved in terms of the program's speed, as the administration, creation of change orders, issuance of those orders, and shipping of products take a while."
What is our primary use case?
My use cases for HPE GreenLake for File Storage primarily include the data stores on the VMware cluster and also SAP, as we have an SAP on-premise that provides a different array to supply the storage for the SAP servers, while everything else throughout the globe serves as data storage for VMware.
What is most valuable?
The feature of HPE GreenLake for File Storage that I appreciate the most is the product line, especially since the Alletra MP is bringing to bear quite a lot of features that are important in the different plans, including file services, block storage, file, and everything. The older storage products we have were limited to just block storage, and we're really excited about the Alletra MP and where that's going to go, which we plan to continue when we do our data center refresh next year with a much larger array.
An example of how the features of HPE GreenLake for File Storage have been benefiting my organization is through the reliability and stability we experience, as the engineering team that takes care of it, plus my team that reports up to me, are very comfortable with the technology, which has been reliable, and HPE's support has been fantastic. Anytime we have issues, such as a failed drive or code updates, they are very helpful, and I think part of that is brought to us by the GreenLake program, having that dedicated team to keep us aware of updates, but generally, we have experienced reliability with no failures.
What needs improvement?
I would like to see HPE GreenLake for File Storage improved in terms of the program's speed, as the administration, creation of change orders, issuance of those orders, and shipping of products take a while. There's a backend machine that HPE has to go through, and we shared with them a month ago at a user group that we want to see improvements in the efficiency of that backend, as no questions arise about the technology, it's really just the paperwork required to get a contract out that is a little slow.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution's scaling abilities affect the operation of my business significantly, as I see it as a key feature that prevents us from being locked into a certain maximum size, and with the Alletra MP, we are able to scale quite large.
How are customer service and support?
I would rate the support I've received from HPE a nine, simply for the fact that no one's quite perfect, but concerning the storage itself, they're pretty damn close to perfect.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I cannot speak to the solutions I considered prior to switching to HPE GreenLake for File Storage, as that was a long time before my time, but this year I reevaluated what we were doing and why, ensuring our pricing was lined up with the market by evaluating both servers and storage technology as well as the intangibles of each vendor's support organization, leading me to the comfortable conclusion that HPE still remains the best choice for us.
What was our ROI?
I have seen a return on investment, which is a little more nuanced, as with HPE GreenLake for File Storage being an operational expense allows me to do a lot more with fewer dollars, spread over the course of the contract, and that helps bring new technology in or expand what I need to, compared to capital costs.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with the pricing, setup costs, and licensing has been generally favorable, as the account team is pretty strong and experienced. They do their best to get the machine out, and regarding pricing, this year I compared it with other vendors, and HPE is still on par with what the other vendors have out there, so I'm comfortable with the pricing.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
The main point that made me come to that realization is some of the intangibles. While pricing is on par and we know what we'll pay whether we go with Dell or stay with HPE, the team that takes care of our organization has been doing so for the last 10 years, providing on-site support quickly to replace parts, fix issues, and help us troubleshoot, with my account rep Rick Beltz and his team having the necessary resources. He keeps us updated and we have routine meetings about new technology, along with events like Discover allowing us opportunities to meet other customers as well as HPE and partners to find resources.
What other advice do I have?
I am not using or managing my storage AI scale through HPE GreenLake for File Storage at this point, as we do not have an AI presence yet. It is still in development, though the storage we have, especially in the MP line, gives us that foundation, and we're ensuring that when we refresh, we refresh with the proper storage to enable that, while we are still defining what our use cases are for AI.
The solution's data reduction technology has reduced our data center power costs. I cannot specify the exact amount, but I can say that we average about a 2 to 2.5 to 3-to-1 reduction, which obviously reduces the amount of storage required and results in less power being needed because we don't require as much storage.
The importance of having independent scaling of performance and capacity for my storage system lies in serving different workloads, as I can configure the various workloads to take advantage of the processing power within the arrays.
My deployment model for HPE GreenLake for File Storage is all on-prem today, while one of the key areas we're looking at during our current visit is the hybrid cloud, with Azure Local being another key theme of the Discover event regarding HPE's collaboration with Microsoft.
I rate HPE GreenLake for File Storage 9 plus out of 10.

Efficiently manages file storage with reliable performance and dedicated support
Pros and Cons
- "The technical support and customer service with HPE in Colombia is good."
- "The best features of HPE GreenLake for File Storage are that customers appreciate them because they can make availability of the products through the options of service."
- "Regarding potential improvements, I don't have these details, however, I suppose there are areas for enhancement."
- "We have a problem at this moment with the prices when customers want to do the change request; the prices are higher than the customer expects."
What is our primary use case?
We distribute products and in some cases we have to lease Alletra in these products for HPE GreenLake for File Storage. For HPE GreenLake for File Storage, the use case is a surgeon in hospitality. They typically use it for file storage for images because this is health solutions.
What is most valuable?
The best features of HPE GreenLake for File Storage are that customers appreciate them because they can make availability of the products through the options of service.
My impressions of the solution's performance across the entire data footprint are good; the solution is very stable, and we don't receive many cases of problems with the solutions.
In HPE GreenLake, we have an engineer, a technical personnel management, and we feel that this works efficiently since there is always a person that has a GreenLake solution, and they have frequent communication with the end user and with the person in charge of the solution.
What needs improvement?
Regarding potential improvements, I don't have these details, however, I suppose there are areas for enhancement.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have had experience with HPE products and other vendors for a while.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The product is very stable, and we don't have any cases that report problems with the solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have a problem at this moment with the prices when customers want to do the change request; the prices are higher than the customer expects. The customer thinks the prices will be the same as the original GreenLake, and now we are creating a new change request, and the prices are high.
The customer is asking us why we are now giving them a higher price than the initial project, which is the problem when we want to add capacity; the price may change, and the customer has another expectation.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support and customer service with HPE in Colombia is good; however, for GreenLake, people prefer support in Spanish, as sometimes the support is in English. The support with GreenLake is good because we always have an engineer who helps the customer, so if they need support, this person helps the customers find the correct way to get support.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I am not sure if they used a different solution before HPE GreenLake for File Storage.
How was the initial setup?
HPE has many tools that help manage the solutions for GreenLake and cloud of other options.
What was our ROI?
Over the years, we don't see reduced costs. Regarding power costs, there is a reduction in the total project with the HPE GreenLake system for the customer.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I am familiar with other file and object storage products, and in our company, about two years ago, we sold Hitachi too. That's not similar to HPE GreenLake for File Storage. The main differences between Hitachi and HPE for their file storage are that Hitachi is more focused only on storage. HPE has computing and hyper-converged; Hitachi is more focused only on storage, so they have specific products with other brands, while our solution is more specific and focused on storage.
What other advice do I have?
We need to do some change requests to add compute units. In some cases, the customer needs more than the initial design. Someone from HPE is always checking how the customer consumes and uses the compute units and the storage, so it works efficiently for the customer. Both performance and capacity are important for the customer. When the customer needs more capacity, we have cases where we are requesting more capacity and processing prices for the solution. There are options that the customer can pay as consumption.
Overall, on a scale of one to ten, I would rate the solution as nine; there are always some problems.

Pros and Cons
- "What I really appreciate about HPE GreenLake for File Storage is its well-organized, packaged platform for running enterprise workloads on the cloud."
- "From my standpoint, the single user interface could definitely be improved. It provides a fast head start, but when dealing with complex situations, it doesn't lead you effectively or offer direction on managing these complex workflows."
What is our primary use case?
We use HPE GreenLake for File Storage for running our application workloads and data workloads.
What is most valuable?
What I really appreciate about HPE GreenLake for File Storage is its well-organized, packaged platform for running enterprise workloads on the cloud. It supports big data workloads and, despite being on-premises, offers subscription models similar to a cloud model. This provides the flexibility of a pay-per-consumption model, allowing me to choose resources without investing in the entire platform.
What needs improvement?
From my standpoint, the single user interface could definitely be improved. It provides a fast head start, but when dealing with complex situations, it doesn't lead you effectively or offer direction on managing these complex workflows.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE GreenLake for File Storage for about one and a half years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
There are intermittent situations, a common issue for many software systems due to the integration of open-source products with proprietary ones. It's not purely HPE's fault as the open-source systems can sometimes misbehave, leading to internal inconsistencies.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution's scaling abilities are seamless and align well with enterprise needs. It's suitable for startup growth as well as large enterprises, and the modular, disaggregated nature provides the flexibility needed for efficient application scaling.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I come from a background with NetApp and EMC, having worked for EMC² before its acquisition by Dell. I'm familiar with Dell storage systems. HPE GreenLake stands out due to its evolution from a standard file storage system to a comprehensive data ecosystem.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was moderate; it wasn't extremely easy or difficult.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Pricing for HPE GreenLake for File Storage is competitive with market standards. It provides excellent pricing for massive enterprise customers wishing to remain on-premises while achieving competitive prices to cloud providers without requiring migration.
What other advice do I have?
The documentation requires improvement, and users new to the HPE ecosystem might need guidance from HPE personnel. I rate HPE GreenLake for File Storage around eight out of ten overall.

Predictable pricing model boosts budgeting confidence and enhances VM platform operations
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature of HPE GreenLake for File Storage is the pricing model."
- "To improve HPE GreenLake for File Storage, there should be better explanations of what it is, what the customer's specific GreenLake implementation covers, and what is in scope and what is out of it."
What is our primary use case?
Our use case for HPE GreenLake for File Storage is compute virtualization. For us, compute virtualization is essentially a platform for VMs, and HPE GreenLake for File Storage is the hardware that runs our VM platform.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of HPE GreenLake for File Storage is the pricing model. We already had Synergy hardware, so it wasn't an architectural technical change. We went from a situation of deciding whether to buy or lease to just knowing our exact bill, which provides us with predictability.
This pricing model has benefited our organization because we were able to save money, avoid capital expense, and gain more predictability. It also helps us since we're still not very far into public cloud yet, so being able to take a half step and maintain on-premises controls while seeing exactly how much we're paying has been helpful.
Overall, I would assess the effectiveness of the solution when it comes to data-intensive workloads as moderate. Some of the pain points we uncovered during the migration related to relatively large-scale data workloads. We identified some bottlenecks in the blade systems and the way we had set them up that weren't previously apparent because we consolidated down.
The independent scaling and performance capacity for our storage system is fairly important for our business because we have workloads that are very compute-heavy and very storage-intensive, and there's not a one-to-one relation. Being able to grow one without the other is very important, as we can react better to business needs, and we don't have to worry about budgets being out of sync or buying storage or compute-only nodes.
What stood out to me in the testing phase that ultimately made me decide to go with HPE GreenLake for File Storage was the financial aspect, where the numbers were smaller, which management always appreciates. It wasn't GreenLake specific, but some of the reporting and additional information we had, along with some specific technical things we did as part of the POC using new automations, helped us build a new greenfield platform that enabled us to do things we couldn't do before.
What needs improvement?
To improve HPE GreenLake for File Storage, there should be better explanations of what it is, what the customer's specific GreenLake implementation covers, and what is in scope and what is out of it.
I had challenges explaining to my leadership and our purchasing team what we actually bought or own, and some days, I'm not even sure myself. Better understanding and transparency around what this is and what it covers is something that could be improved.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I would assess the stability and reliability of HPE GreenLake for File Storage as very stable and reliable. We've had some repeated hardware failures, which I attribute to new hardware or firmware, but it's performing as good or better than our existing equipment.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution's scaling abilities affect our operations by providing better visibility. We always monitored resources, but now that we're actually getting billed for it, there's greater visibility. We have better engagement with HP and our partner because they're watching all the charts and have full visibility, so we can track everything going up and know when we need to make budgetary decisions.
How are customer service and support?
Overall, I would evaluate the customer service and technical support I've received as very good. It has been very easy to get HP support. They supported us during the POC, and it's been very easy to get support in general. We have an account manager, and the account team is engaged and has helped us, so overall, the support has been good.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We didn't specifically look at other solutions before selecting HPE GreenLake for File Storage. We had a renewal for our Synergy coming up, and our partner in concert with HP offered us the opportunity to do a POC of GreenLake. We were able to evaluate that and perform some other POC activities with technologies we wouldn't have been able to practically do with what we have.
How was the initial setup?
My experience with the pricing and setup cost and licensing is that licensing isn't really applicable to us. We got it because the price was competitive compared to a regular lease. It would be positive there; we did it for several reasons, but part of it was cost savings, and we were able to achieve that.
