Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable aspect of the solution is the ability to discover and track transactions.""Knowing which tables on the database were working the most was valuable. It helped the client understand where they need to focus. They streamlined a lot of their queries and brought the resource usage down. It helped them to find long-running queries. They rewrote them completely so that they don't take as long and the application performs better.""You have a live view of what happens when something goes wrong on the production or support side. You don't have to scramble and do guesswork. We can identify the query that creates the bottleneck or slows the performance of the database system. It can give you points on how to debug and fix the system.""The most valuable feature of AppDynamics is that we can see all query times. If a particular query is taking too much time, we can alert it.""I have found some of the valuable features of AppDynamics Database Monitoring to be once the installation is complete, you are able to quickly start receiving metrics, which is great. The user interface is also very user-friendly.""The feature that is most valuable to us is the snapshot feature. It allows us to get a snapshot of different SQL scripts that are being executed simultaneously and we can identify everything we need on them.""The solution is great for database monitoring. You don't have to install an agent on the database. You just install the server to a database agent. It's a good product for some database administration if you don't want to install an agent on the database for security.""The product is easy to install, it took about half an hour. The use and the configurations are simple as well."

Cons
"The solution should add some monitoring similar to Oracle monitoring tools for databases. It has a lot of features to monitor SQL queries, and make some recommendation to resolve it. AppDynamics is just monitoring for delays and doesn't provide any recommendations for that. It's a deficiency.""The solution must improve security and setup.""The day-to-day activities should be less complicated so that anyone can manage it.""This product has an issue with initial lag upon opening that we would like to see improved.""The solution needs to support IBM products.""I have found it sometimes a bit difficult to trace the transaction all the way through to the application. I'm not sure if that problem is on the database side or on the application side, but that would be something that I would like to be improved. The traceability from the application to the database, sometimes, is a bit of a challenge. If you're using AppDynamics, with the Java agent, for instance, you need to be able to trace it through.""The solution could improve the server size for AppDynamics to include middleware products, which is doesn't yet cover. If they add middleware for sophisticated sites, AppDynamics would be the global choice.""AppDynamics Database Monitoring could improve the price of the solution, it is costly."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "In terms of pricing, I feel that when you compare the benefits that we get to the price that we paid, it is reasonable."
  • "Pricing is based on the size of the deployment."
  • "There is an annual cost for the use of this solution."
  • "It could be a bit lower, but looking at the scalability, functionality, and other things, you can understand why AppDynamics is so expensive as compared to some of the cheaper products that don't have that full single pane of glass they've got. Dynatrace has got three different elements that you need to log into just to get a full view, which is not so good, and because of that, it is a bit cheaper."
  • "The licensing scheme is very complex. They need to make it easier."
  • "We have purchased a few licenses for AppDynamics Database Monitoring and the price is high."
  • "The license for AppDynamics is procured by our customers."
  • "We have a license-based solution. That means you need a license for each server you monitor."

    Overview

More than half of application performance bottlenecks originate in the database, but most application teams have little or no visibility into database performance. With AppDynamics' database performance management product, you get 100% visibility into application performance, from the browser to the database.

    Key Benefits

    • Visualize end-to-end application performance, from the browser to the database
    • Get alerts when database thresholds are violated
    • Monitor key performance metrics like top users, programs, SQL, objects and more.
    • See execution plans for slow SQL to isolate performance bottlenecks

Compuware Strobe is the industry-leading mainframe application performance management and analysis solution for mainframe applications. With Strobe, IT departments can pinpoint application inefficiencies that cause excessive CPU consumption, elongated elapsed times and reduce hardware and software costs while increasing customer satisfaction.

    With Strobe, mainframe teams can:

    • Locate and improve resource-consumptive database calls
    • Identify tuning opportunities to reduce monthly software licensing costs (MLC)
    • Resolve performance issues before they impact application service levels
    • Apply analytics to captured data to produce reports showing high-resource consumption and applications that need tuning
    • Measure activity of both online and batch-processing applications in single and multiple- system environments
    • Identify several I/O problems, including inefficient VSAM file buffering
    • Create and schedule automatic, reusable measurements
    • Automatically detect performance problems by using a rolling average of CPU consumption and elapsed-time metrics
