We performed a comparison between Amazon Redshift, Oracle Exadata, and Snowflake based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out what your peers are saying about Snowflake Computing, Oracle, Teradata and others in Data Warehouse."Easy to build out our snowflake design and load data."
"The initial setup is easy."
"It allows you write complex queries and perform row by row processes."
"Redshift's Excel features are handy. Redshift spectrum allows you to directly query the data on an Excel sheet. Now, SQL Server also allows this, but Redshift has many more features."
"The stability of Amazon Redshift is good."
"The solution is scalable. It handles different loads very well."
"The product is relatively easy to use because there is no indexing and no partitions."
"Redshift COPY command, because much of my work involved helping customers migrate large amounts of data into Redshift."
"The performance on the databases is good."
"Oracle Exadata has very good hardware."
"The most valuable feature is the time to solution."
"It is the best solution for OLTP and data warehousing."
"We like the tool’s features like Smart Scan, Hybrid Columnar Compression, and the TFA."
"A very stable solution, which we have hardly any problems with."
"The business intelligence is very good."
"Exadata is a fantastic machine. Two features stand out. The first is the resource input/output management tool that allows you to manage the resources to the neck on the Exadata box."
"My company wanted to have all our data in one single place and this what we use Snowflake for. Snowflake also allows us to build connectors to different data sources."
"The solution's computing time is less."
"Time travel is one feature that really helps us out."
"The ability to share the data and the ability to scale up and down easily are the most valuable features. The concept of data sharing and data plumbing made it very easy to provide and share data. The ability to refresh your Dev or QA just by doing a clone is also valuable. It has the dynamic scale up and scale down feature. Development and deployment are much easier as compared to other platforms where you have to go through a lot of stuff. With a tool like DBT, you can do modeling and transformation within a single tool and deploy to Snowflake. It provides continuous deployment and continuous integration abilities. There is a separation of storage and compute, so you only get charged for your usage. You only pay for what you use. When we share the data downstream with business partners, we can specifically create compute for them, and we can charge back the business."
"The speed of data loading and being able to quickly create the environment are most valuable."
"It helped us to build MVP (minimum viable product) for our idea of building a data warehouse model for small businesses."
"Its performance is most valuable. As compared to SQL Server, we are able to see a significant improvement in performance with Snowflake."
"I like the fact that we don't need a DBA. It automatically scales stuff."
"Amazon should provide more cloud-native tools that can integrate with Redshift like Microsoft's development tools for Azure."
"AWS Snowflake has a very good feature for cloning databases. It makes it easy to clone a data warehouse, which is useful. I would like to see this feature in Redshift."
"Amazon Redshift does not have the capability to dynamically increase the VM file."
"We recently moved from the DC2 cluster to the RA3 cluster, which is a different node type and we are finding some issues with the RA3 cluster regarding connection and processing. There is room for improvement in this area. We are in talks with AWS regarding the connection issues."
"It would be nice if we could turn off an instance. However, it would retain the instance in history, thus allowing us to restart without beginning from scratch."
"In the solution, user-based access is quite hard. In general, certain permissions are difficult to manage."
"In terms of improvement, I believe Amazon Redshift could work on reducing its costs, as they tend to increase significantly. Additionally, there are occasional issues with nodes going down, which can be problematic."
"It would be useful to have an option where all of the data can be queried at once and then have the result shown."
"Oracle Exadata has room for improvement in pricing, especially for smaller companies. The solution is okay for bigger companies, but for smaller companies, it isn't."
"The initial setup process is very difficult and extremely complex."
"The integration with third-party applications regarding access management security could be better."
"It would be good if Exadata made some new features available regarding data retrieval and speed capacity functions."
"The handling of temp space has room for improvement."
"We have a little trepidation with the system as it does have a learning curve. Also changing to a binary logging format for us feels like retrograde motion, but sadly almost all Linux variants have moved in this direction."
"Sometimes it takes too long time to get help with technical issues."
"The customization can sometimes be difficult to achieve."
"Snowflake has support for stored procedures, but it is not that powerful."
"I think that Snowflake could improve its user interface. The current one is not interactive."
"In a future release we would like to have a link which would allow us to connect to an external database and create certain views in your own database. This is because it is becoming hard for us to compare the data between multiple sources."
"The scheduling system can definitely be better because we had to use external airflow for that. There should be orchestration for the scheduling system. Snowflake currently does not support machine learning, so it is just storage. They also need some alternatives for SQL Query. There should also be support for Spark in different languages such as Python."
"It's difficult to know how to size everything correctly."
"It's not that flexible when compared to Oracle."
"It needs a bit more rigor and governance, which is something you don't get with newer tools. This makes it less enterprise scalable. Its governance and structure can be enhanced, which would really be valuable. I would like to see some kind of prebuilt functionality in terms of having almost like a pre-built data warehouse. A functionality for generating automated kind of pieces would be good."
"Snowflake can improve its machine learning and AI capabilities."
