We performed a comparison between Dell SC Series, IBM System Storage DS8000 Series, and VMAX [EOL] based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out what your peers are saying about Hitachi Vantara, IBM, Dell Technologies and others in Frame-Based Disk Arrays."With federation, you can have multiple systems across sites. You can treat them as one, and with a live migration, volumes don't go down. You can move them from site to site, doing maintenance, and keep your environment up."
"A valuable feature is the performance of the auto-tiering. It will move hot data up to your fastest Tier 1 or move your slow data down. Data progression is what it's called. With the auto-tiering you can have multiple tiers, you can have your Tier 1 be either spinning or flash, all the way down to 7.2K. It will change the RAID on the fly so your writes come in at RAID 10. After they sit for a while, they get converted to RAID 5, then they'll cool off and move down the tiers. Your performance is kept going, while the cold data is moved to your slow, non-performance tiers."
"It is just as stable as any other high-end solution."
"The solution is stable; we've had no problems at all."
"The Dell support is helpful and the response is quick. The agents' knowledge is very good."
"It has good dedupe and compression. Also, the built-in data migration capabilities are pretty good, as is the federation. When we started migrating the workloads from different storage platforms, like NetApp and XtremeIO, it helped us in moving to that direction."
"We replicate between SAN to SAN for a lot of features and supportability. It also helps us when we want to upgrade to a newer SC Series or move the data from one data center to another."
"We see very low latency with very high IOPS for mixed workloads."
"The Global Copy and Global Mirror features are the solution's most valuable aspects."
"The high throughput feature is the most powerful thing in this product."
"I like the many new features, especially the all-flash solution."
"The interface is good, and it is also customizable."
"A rock solid foundation to deploy applications which cannot incur a disruption of service."
"We have been able to present storage from the VMAX to hosts without any problems."
"The most valuable features are the interface and performance."
"Deploying, Expanding, and Modifying systems are easier than ever."
"VMAX3 is our main system for storage. All our systems and all our virtualizations are connected to it. In terms of expanding it, we are replacing it with a new system, the PowerMax 2000. So our current VMAX3 platform will be decommissioned soon. We are switching to PowerMax 2000 because we are looking for improved performance. We see it as the best fit for our requirements in terms of the performance and the overall cost."
"It works with our replication technology, which is not SRDF, which is native replication technology."
"I would like to see an integrated key manager in the controllers. Currently, it's an external product. It would be nice to have the option of having a built-in key for self-encrypting drive features."
"The interface could be improved. It should have an application point of view."
"Dell could improve the upgrading process."
"It would be helpful if the solution offered higher performance, at least on the back end."
"One option I would like to see is, when you're up on the view-screen, to be able to incorporate getting to what HPE call the iLO, the Integrated Lights-Out. To be able to get that instead of having to go back and trying to find IP addresses and re-institute those would be good. It would be good to be able to that put on the initial splash screen."
"This product should be a lot more user-friendly."
"Snapshots in VMware. You can’t do snapshots since the storage itself does that. Therefore, some apps (Veeam, for example) don’t work well with this kind of tiering storage."
"We have seen some degraded throughput with mixed workloads. We have been working with Dell EMC to correct some of these latency issues."
"The GUI isn't as user-friendly as other options."
"The solution should embedded replication switches into the hardware instead of using them externally."
"Better speed to release new features that have become industry standards. EMC created so many standards in the past. Now, it seems they are playing a me-too game and lagging behind in some areas, specifically data reduction."
"I'd like to see improvements where we can scale out an existing array and remove older controllers\drives\etc., within the same subsystem."
"The cluster support should be improved."
"The way you configure larger size volumes needs improvement."
"I would like to see support for high-availability."
"The pricing is a bit expensive. That is the reason we are now currently we are looking for other solutions. That's the reason we are looking at AFF and Unity. We are also considering PowerStore."
"I would like this solution to integrate the solution that EMC vPlex offers."
"Resilience replication, reporting, and performance need to be improved."
