We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The compression, encryption and deduplication features are fabulous and great stuff.""We are now using it 24/7 because it is serving as an online backup, and very soon, the DR will activated on the product.""The compression, encryption, and deduplication features all work fine.""The most useful feature is that you can back up the virtual machines in different ways. You can back up from a vhost, and you can also back up from a Windows server. It doesn't matter what type of infrastructure or hypervisor is there. It's very flexible, which is its most useful feature for us.""The Vembu BDR product is very intuitive and easy to use.""The network solution is the most important feature, because we have our own backup server and are doing file backups for our customers.""I am able to run Vembu on Windows NAS, which is beneficial. It does install on a Windows-based NAS. You can have the server running from the location where you are storing backups. You don't need a separate server for it in this case.""You can restore all your data or partial parts of it. You can restore a specific version of the data. It has a lot of options for restore, so you can have the correct data that you want to restore. This is very important. You must know what you are going to restore. Otherwise, you may be overwriting correct data with other data. You must know what specific files you are restoring as well as which version. Partial restore is very important because there might be some files which are newer than the backup and some files that are corrupted. You need to restore some files from the backup, but not all the files."

"The initial setup was simple and easy. Anyone without prior experience can install, configure, and use it.""VM backup and the item level recovery are the most valuable features.""The interface is user-friendly and even if our tech isn't onsite, we can work with the owners to confirm that the data will be restored with no issues.""This solution is stable.""We frequently use the granular restore option for when our users accidentally delete files or to recover emails from mailboxes. We have found that to be a must-have feature and it comes with the solution at no extra cost.""It is an excellent product. It is easy to deploy, stable, and fast. Their support is excellent.""The CDP backup feature is very nice, as it allows you to take backups at high frequencies and with application consistency.""All of the features are fantastic and also the management from Microsoft dealing with multiple machines is great. The whole package is excellent for me."

Cons
"Scheduling backups is challenging due to the poor quality of the UI.""One thing that I reported with the backups: When there are accentuated characters in a path, then we can't restore documents into a folder. There is a bug with the restoration and restoring files with accentuated characters in the path. Hopefully, they have repaired this because otherwise we will restore files and find out that they are not there.""The phone [support] system is a negative five on a scale from one to ten, where one is the worst. They wanted me to leave a message. When there is a problem with the product and you call in, you want to talk to somebody or wait to talk to somebody, not leave a message.""The interface could be better because I have to fumble around to find things. I can't just sit down at the terminal and know exactly what to do. It could be just me, but I have used a number of different backup products, and I found them simpler. However, its features are very good, so I don't mind sacrificing a bit of extra time to do what I need.""There are bugs. For one month, I encountered a big issue where my storage pool could not be identified. My backups were stopped because they were not able to locate the storage pool. So, I removed the settings and started the backups again. The application is not stable. It needs some debugging and testing on the build side of production.""The support is a bit slow in resolving an issue. It takes a long time to recover.""The product is co-branded, not white-labeled.""I suggest that the dump of the database have the option to either be backed up to Vembu Cloud or be backed up to all backup sites and not only to default storage."

More BDRSuite Cons →

"It would be nice to be able to recover the items to their original location.""Basically, how it works is that you have a single local drive, and then you have a cloud backup. It'd be nice if you could rotate the single local backup drive. As of now, you can't.""Improvement areas for Altaro VM Backup include enhancing backup and deduplication solutions for continuous operation and offering an all-in-one solution for hardware backup.""Migrating the physical through a backup and restore to a virtual environment would be very helpful.""The application could include a feature to install a set size of data, such as the ability to store a single application with all its registry information for easy transfer.""The cloud backup and VMware support (now available in the latest releases), could do with some improvement.""Backup speed and comparisons between versions used to be slow on big VMs but that was improved greatly later on.""Replication is not fast, the GUI could be more user-friendly, and technical support is lacking in Iran."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The product's pricing is a good value. Vembu is cost-effective versus using VMware Essentials. Regarding licensing, make sure you find the right workstation or server that you're going to install it on, and know the number of sockets it has, since the price depends on that."
  • "It is very cost efficient, effective. I’d say it's one-third the cost of Veritas when compared to the server backups. I even tried image backups on Acronis, but Acronis is very expensive. So these are some of the key reasons why I opted for it."
  • "We were able to take advantage of a promotional pricing campaign."
  • "The pricing structure is in line with other solutions. However, the option to replicate offsite to a unit at another office or at home is a big cost benefit. Instead of paying monthly for cloud storage, you replicate offsite for free."
  • "Pricing is fair enough. What was not clear enough in the documentation on the website was that that you're licensing per CPU socket and you are only licensing on the restore sockets, not the backup sockets. It's a bit technical, but it was very well explained during the demonstration that we had during the evaluation period."
  • "I prefer the way Vembu is licensed. When you look at Veeam or any other product, they price per node. Vembu is licensed per host. You just buy a host license and it backs up unlimited VMs within that host. The others charge per VM."
  • "Vembu is too expensive because they don't really have small-business pricing. This is a matter of personal opinion. They're going to tell you that they have competitive pricing because there are more expensive solutions in the marketplace, but there are better solutions in the marketplace that are more expensive. Their product is a better fit for small businesses, but they don't price it that way."
  • "The product's pricing is of good value. It was much more affordable than the alternative solution to it, which was Veeam. That would be the closest competitor, and between those two, Vembu was much more affordable. It seemed reasonable for what we needed to do."

  • "There is a free version for Hosts with 2 VMs."
  • "There is a free version for two VMs. I would advise to study the deployment environment well, prior to committing to order a license per host."
  • "No other product offers these features for this price. The ROI is great."
  • "By implementing the solution at multiple locations, significant cost savings were achieved."
  • "Altaro VM Backup is affordably priced. It is a best value for its price and has almost every feature that an expensive, popular product offers."
  • "The pricing is okay,"
  • "VMware is a little pricey, but it is a good solution and priced similar to other products."
  • "Altaro had the best prices and ROI in the whole bunch that we evaluated."
