Q&A Highlights
Question: Does Amazon WorkDocs offer any unique advantages over SharePoint?
Answer: Amazon WorkDocs offers the following advantages over SharePoint: It is a fully managed service, meaning that Amazon takes care of the underlying infrastructure and maintenance. It is more scalable so organizations of all sizes can use it. It is more secure, as it is hosted on Amazon's secure cloud infrastructure. SharePoint, on the other hand, offers the following advantages over Amazon WorkDocs: It has a wider range of features, such as workflow automation and business intelligence. It is more integrated with other Microsoft products like Office 365. It is more widely used, so more documentation and support are available. If you are looking for a simple and secure solution that is easy to use, Amazon WorkDocs could be the solution for you. Still, if you need a more powerful and feature-rich solution, SharePoint may be a better option.

"The security feature is valuable.""This solution has helped us with the categorization, organization, management, discovery, and delivery of program and project related information.""It's stable. It's very widely used by companies. Also, the knowledge of the product has improved over the years, and by other companies that support it or are Microsoft SharePoint partners. So if there are problems, there's always a user or company that knows the information or can help you; even with very uncommon problems.""Our staff found it simpler, as they did not have to work within a classification system.""It is very stable.""Tech support tops off as excellent.""Combined reports and data with timeline tracking.""The most valuable feature is the ability to easily build intranet sites for communicating within teams, storing documentation, product information, pricing policies, updates on product infrastructure, and other related news."

Cons
"I had a very bitter experience with their mobile app."

More Amazon WorkDocs Cons →

"It is too heavy. MS should not have paid foreign coders dollars per each row of code. They wasted the stability and reliability in the end.""We would like more security features, like automating.""Improve the user-friendliness.""Search can be improved a lot because we are always trying to compare it with Google Search. Beyond that, it would be helpful to tag the documents.""When you are trying to migrate from a different platform to SharePoint for file storage, the upload utility should be more flexible, taking more files and then updating you on the upload status of the files you are trying to transfer into SharePoint.""Integration needs to be more straightforward, particularly with Azure. SharePoint also needs a more comprehensive introductory course for users.""The company also needs to make sure that their policies are dictating how information is stored and used, instead of letting SharePoint take control.""Document management and the ability to easily integrate single sign-on (SSO) are areas for improvement in SharePoint."

At Mediacurrent we often get requests to compare Drupal to other platforms used for intranet sites and social business platforms (like https://dev.twitter.com/ for example). This is often referred to as “Social Business Software”, which has grown in popularity in recent years. I decided to do a round-up of a couple of the more well known platforms and compare their products to Drupal. In this roundup we will be comparing Jive, Sharepoint and Drupal Commons. Drupal Commons is a popular distribution created by Acquia to compete with some of these other proprietary platforms. There are many other options out there, commercial and otherwise, to compare with Drupal but I want to focus on Jive and Sharepoint for a couple of reasons. I chose Jive because it is one of the leading competitors in this space in respect to market share. Next, I chose Sharepoint because I have some history with Sharepoint. This experience dates back to when I built www.adhe.edu with Sharepoint 2007 a few years ago. I subsequently wrote this blog entry about my experience shortly after joining Mediacurrent. This roundup will also act as a refresher for those who read my original “Drupal vs. Sharepoint” blog. Yammer, which was recently bought by Microsoft and is the tool we currently use for office communication will also get some mentions throughout this article. As I went through and tested each of these tools I used three main criteria in my evaluation Cost Ability to Customize Overall features… Read more →
