We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It enables us to provide more solution options for our clients, with the reassurance that, when implemented, they will be efficient and stable.""StarWind Virtual SAN is a very mature software that supersedes its capabilities with my use cases.""We are running Hyper-V on twin servers in failover, and being able to manage servers from anywhere I need to, virtually, has been a game changer.""The backup is readily available for use, and the restoration process is easy.""Before VSAN, hypervisor configuration changes and updates resulted in VM outages. Now, downtime is dramatically reduced.""StarWind vSAN has allowed us to leverage our server infrastructure more completely without the need to add more hardware.""The support has been amazing and quick to reply.""This solution enables us to make better cost-effective use of our existing hardware and leverage the current infrastructure at a higher level than we could before."

"Creating snapshots within seconds for big disks has helped our different migration projects since it allows us to perform them in a short period of time.""With StorPool we were able to build live failover on top of our LXC infrastructure. This allows us both to live-migrate containers between compute nodes without any downtime and, in case of an entire node suffering any type of failure, we can bring all containers back online within a minute on a spare compute node.""The team behind it was very engaged and had the skills and ability to support a service provider.""The two 10GE networks provide redundancy and increased performance as they serve as two separate networks doubling the throughput and doing multipathing and load balancing. We now have a high performance shared storage system which enables us to run on private cloud. Our previous system used bare-metal hardware, which provided high performance but inflexible management. Now we have best of both worlds, SSD-class performance with flexibility of a private cloud system.""The speed of the storage solution also allows us to provide service to applications that are very I/O intensive.""Performance, redundancy, scalability and cost-effectiveness. StorPool delivers superbly in all of these areas."

Cons
"The console is something that I believe could be enhanced.""Ongoing improvements in read and write performance would help meet increasingly demanding workloads.""It runs until it does not - and disaster recovery documentation is sparse and mostly unclear.""To enable the proactive support capability that is part of our support agreement, I would ask that the terms and conditions be revised and made acceptable to corporate security.""An extended trial period would serve as a way to get clean insights into the technology's adaptability and alignment with their specific needs before committing to long-term integration.""I see no need for major improvements but there could be some improvements in the form of notifications and the simplifying of maintenance mode.""Perhaps the developer should refine the product management through PowerShell.""Besides not being able to use any filesystem, I do not have any additional cons."

"he only place we feel they could improve is the time it takes to bring new features to production.""I have personally met with multiple Storpool engineers and spoke about different options and features. There are too many features that we don't know or use yet. My recommendation would be to promote the new features and give users different examples of how they can be used and how we can benefit from them.""Live and historical performance statistics would be useful, though my understanding is that this is on the way in a future release.""Monitoring and statistics UI is a bit clumsy.""At times we need to check the disks and do some minor operations. A friendlier user interface would be useful in such cases.""It would be good if, with next releases, StorPool provide a better GUI for monitoring and statistics. This would make our experience even better and complete."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "It provides us with a significant reduction in TCO due to their pay-as-you-grow licensing model, which means we don’t have to pay upfront for hardware and licensing for capacity thStorPoolat we don’t yet need to use."
  • "StorPool's pricing and licensing model is very transparent. As always, one has to due his due diligence when choosing a product like distributed storage solutions."
  • "StorPool software is cost-effective and gives us a pricing advantage over our competitors."
