We performed a comparison between DataCore SANsymphony and HPE SimpliVity based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two HCI solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."StarWind allowed us to deploy highly available shared storage within our budget."
"The product only requires two VMWare ESXi host servers versus three host servers for VMware's comparable solution."
"This product now allows us to migrate virtual machines between nodes as if we had a dedicated $100,000 SAN in the mix without the additional cost and management of the SAN."
"The primary purpose of this software is to create a virtual SAN between local storage on Hyper-V hosts. I find this feature most valuable since it accomplishes this quite well."
"We are able to execute maintenance on one server while the other is still running."
"Support keeps track of alerts of the system and verifies with us if we need help to fix any issues. They have great and quick technical support."
"The StarWind tech support is extremely helpful, especially during the initial setup."
"It integrates (fully) with VMware and Veeam, my hypervisor, and backup vendors, so for me, all the puzzle pieces simply fit and work smoothly."
"It is a stable solution."
"During the maintenance periods, on any part of the storage or VMware migration, we have had no downtime."
"The solution's most valuable feature is its versatility, with there being support for all new hardware technologies and platforms, disc mirroring and very effective auto tiering."
"Continuous data protection (CDP), can be used to "protect" again ransomware by recording all write on disk in a log. You can recover your data with incredible time granularity."
"The dashboard is very intuitive, and there are many counters to diagnose what happens during a short period (like when a backup is in progress)."
"An advantage of SANsymphony is its ease of use, especially when installing or upgrading the system."
"I found the solution to be very stable."
"It is a very stable solution."
"The most valuable aspect of the HPE SimpliVity is the DL380 G10. We have mostly been using VMware and Hyper-V. On one side we have Hyper-V and the other side we have the VMware."
"The HyperGuarantee is unique and the accelerator card is the primary IP with the product."
"Looking at the way that our infrastructure team works now, we don't think about infrastructure, storage, or compute anymore. The solution just works. It is same with the backup and replication side of things, as it just works on schedule. We don't have to manage it tightly, like we used to."
"The most valuable features of this solution are the backup rate and the backup transfer."
"The way it does backups is its most valuable feature. It replicates snapshots with very low bandwidth. We only have a 50 megabit link to that site, and it doesn't really use much of it at all. Therefore, it is a really good fit for getting our backups done."
"It is just a one-stop shop, a single appliance that I can control through my virtual center."
"It is easy to set up."
"I like the expandability of the solution. We can effortlessly grow the storage and resources without downtime."
"Updates seem to be non-existent."
"While it is possible to implement disk encryption in StarWind using Windows Bitlocker, such a solution can be a little tricky to manage."
"The reconnection of the attached drives upon a reboot could be improved."
"The only thing that I have any difficulty with is that in order to perform upgrades, it is required that the SANs be detached from the Hosts before that can happen."
"We have, in rare cases, received conflicting guidance between different support folks within StarWind."
"The documentation can be better for the free tier."
"There is no IPv6 support. That is our only issue at this time."
"One main thing this product needs to work on is reporting."
"I still see room for improvement with DataCore SANsymphony in the area of alarm and task management."
"The graphical interface is not always very stable."
"When I sometimes reboot for maintenance, the connectivity from the iSCSI initiator host could be improved."
"I think an easier way to open a service call, right through the DataCore GUI, would be an improvement, especially when there is an urgent issue."
"I would like to see SMPA (Shared Multi-Port Array) technology developed with the aim of allowing a configuration identical to other storage arrays."
"We are waiting for container support (on the roadmap), as well as a user-friendly full web-administration capability, and an improved API."
"DataCore needs a more efficient and better way to keep track of metrics and counters so that we can do baseline analysis to measure performance."
"Unified storage (all block, objects, and files) should be in a single storage pool with unified storage concepts, hence providing the user with whatever they want."
"Its performance can be faster."
"The stability and scalability of the product are areas of concern where improvements are required."
"The life-cycle management can be improved."
"In the next release of the solution, they should make updating the solution easier. Currently, we have HPE doing it for us but I would like to be able to do it."
"The interface is good but takes some time to get used to."
"We had some hardware compatibility issues with the earlier versions of HPE SimpliVity. We upgraded to the latest version a few months ago, and since then, there is no hardware failure, and it is better. They don't provide a portal to create a ticket directly for the HPE SimpliVity. We have a web portal to create a ticket when we have an issue, but for HPE SimpliVity, we need to call the local vendor for support. If they are not able to resolve the issue, they contact the global support, which takes more time. Technology is moving very fast, and everybody nowadays is focusing on the cloud base. In the future, they should integrate it with the cloud base for the backup."
"The greatest disadvantage is the update process. Every patch or release update must be checked and deployed with the HPE solution, which sometimes is a little bit difficult. It is not difficult in terms of installation, but it is difficult to get the patches in time."
"The upgrades need improvement."
