We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature in this solution, for our business, is the clear way of projecting the connections between the database and the traffic inflow. This is very helpful when troubleshooting issues.""AppDynamics is scalable. They can monitor billions of transactions because they're not monitoring all transactions. They're monitoring samples. So, they can offer good monitoring for the huge sites.""The feature that is most valuable to us is the snapshot feature. It allows us to get a snapshot of different SQL scripts that are being executed simultaneously and we can identify everything we need on them.""The good thing with AppDynamics Databases is that it will give you a pretty good overview of the data, all the database-like tables, long-running queries, jobs running on the databases, and the queries that are taking more time. So, it's at a deeper level with all the database functionalities, and you will get that information. So, it's a pretty good tool in that sense.""In my experience, it's easy to use. There's nothing complex to learn or fear. You can quickly adapt to it without the need for extensive training.""AppDynamics Database Monitoring's dashboarding is its best feature.""To be honest, it's a fantastic product.""Data monitoring is the most valuable feature."

"The ability to build integrations to tools that are not monitored out of the box is the most valuable feature.""One of the best aspects of Geneos is that it has a broad scope and can cover a lot of use cases. You can write your own scripts to monitor really specific things. And the rules that you can put in place can be quite complex for the alerts.""One of the most valuable features is that it can be configured by non-developers. It doesn't require development expertise to configure it.""This solution has helped provide relief to existing Level 2 teams, allowing them to focus efforts on in-depth problem analysis.""The Netprobe is so lightweight compared to the agents that most monitoring tools use. It's really superior to the competition. The agent that is used by almost every competitive tool takes a lot more system resources. It's slower and it requires a greater effort and more compromises in terms of security to install on the monitored servers. With Geneos, because it lives outside the code, it is far easier and far less taxing on the monitored systems.""Ability to monitor logs for potential issues to prevent app outages before problems get a chance to arise. That's invaluable for our teams in a fast-paced trading environment.""Tons of default modules which are available out of the box""The filtering in the Active Console is exceptional. Depending on the user base, some people don't want to see server-level errors, so we have filters set up in the Managed Entities view, which allow us to filter out things that certain groups don't want to see, while allowing them to see other things. It's a great real-time monitoring solution. And you can draw graphs immediately, right from the Active Console, whether they're current graphs or historical graphs."

Cons
"The product lost its place as an industry leader.""It could be more user-friendly for beginners.""The solution should add some monitoring similar to Oracle monitoring tools for databases. It has a lot of features to monitor SQL queries, and make some recommendation to resolve it. AppDynamics is just monitoring for delays and doesn't provide any recommendations for that. It's a deficiency.""The user access management could be a bit better.""The solution needs to support IBM products.""The product's drawback is the licensing pricing. It could be better.""The major concern lies with reports, specifically their configurability. It's like, if I want to combine multiple reports and generate them all at once, that's not possible. Even though there's a setup for generating 25 reports, I wanted to group them all and generate them in one go, which isn't currently feasible. I have to manually run each report and set the time for it.""The solution could improve the server size for AppDynamics to include middleware products, which is doesn't yet cover. If they add middleware for sophisticated sites, AppDynamics would be the global choice."

More AppDynamics Database Monitoring Cons →

"Geneos' application monitoring could be improved a lot. Products like AppDynamics and Dynatrace provide the process thread-level monitoring, but Geneos lacks these capabilities.""It needs to be easier to configure, especially with the JMX plugins.""Their cloud monitoring solution needs to be improved. I have already given them the feedback that it's not capable of meeting the latest technology needs.""The dashboard feature is full of bugs. Grouping items results in a distorted dashboard.""Mobile phone integration is probably not as rich as it could be.""Currently, it is difficult to monitor secure websites using SSL or with SSO enabled.""One thing that could be improved in terms of rapid scaling would be more ability to clone aspects of an implementation. It seems like there are opportunities in this area, where we have repetitive tasks to do when it comes to implementing things on new servers or on new gateways. It would be great if there was an easy way to clone something that had already been done.""Backward compatibility with deprecated features and in system documentation on what configuration areas are needed to be updated."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "In terms of pricing, I feel that when you compare the benefits that we get to the price that we paid, it is reasonable."
  • "Pricing is based on the size of the deployment."
  • "There is an annual cost for the use of this solution."
  • "It could be a bit lower, but looking at the scalability, functionality, and other things, you can understand why AppDynamics is so expensive as compared to some of the cheaper products that don't have that full single pane of glass they've got. Dynatrace has got three different elements that you need to log into just to get a full view, which is not so good, and because of that, it is a bit cheaper."
  • "The licensing scheme is very complex. They need to make it easier."
  • "We have purchased a few licenses for AppDynamics Database Monitoring and the price is high."
  • "The license for AppDynamics is procured by our customers."
  • "We have a license-based solution. That means you need a license for each server you monitor."
  • More AppDynamics Database Monitoring Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "You will get the best price if you get a single global deal."
  • "The product is priced quite high. There are pricing options for customers based on the size of the environment and plug-ins used by the monitoring system."
  • "Pricing and licensing is based on the requirements."
  • "The licensing cost may seem expensive upfront. However, the service is outstanding, the tool does things that no other tools can do, and the customizability more than makes up for the cost of licensing."
  • "Pricing is the touchy subject, even here. Upper management always wants us to find a cheaper solution. But we have so much integrated with ITRS... It's expensive, but it does its job very well. And you set it and go."
  • "It is expensive. They have to look at the model around when we move to cloud and how that's going to work. The licensing cost does pay off because of the improvements in support to our business."
  • "When I first came in, their pricing was very high. ITRS had a high expectation of what their price should be based on perceived value. I think they have been realizing, more recently, that there are other competitors, so their pricing is a lot better. Licensing for on-premise is okay, however I feel there is quite some work to be done for cloud and containers. We're still working with them to try and work out what that pricing should look like."
  • "Given our spend and the amount of service we have in it, the pricing is quite reasonable."
