It lowers batch times and allows us to perform real-time reporting.
Pros and Cons
  • "It’s simple to use hardware to fix performance issues. Our issue is poor coding/queries. This greatly speeded things up. It’s too costly to track down poor programming in applications. The price of a developer’s time to scan through all the coding is high compared to buying Violin."
  • "VIMM replacement is poorly designed. You have to slide out an entire drawer, remove the cover and then pop out the failed VIMM. I would like to see a front replacement just like with hard disks. This leaves room for error; for example, when you slide it out from the rack, you are moving cables along the cable management arm. This leaves the possibility of accidentally unplugging a cable from the array if it is not seated properly. Also, you might pinch the cables when sliding it back into the server rack."

How has it helped my organization?

It has lowered batch times from 14 hours to two hours. It allows us to perform real-time reporting.

What is most valuable?

Speed: It’s simple to use hardware to fix performance issues. Our issue is poor coding/queries. This greatly speeded things up. It’s too costly to track down poor programming in applications. The price of a developer’s time to scan through all the coding is high compared to buying Violin.

What needs improvement?

VIMM replacement is poorly designed. Also, you might pinch the cables when sliding it back into the server rack.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability is perfect, no outages thus far.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is N/A for us. We frontend storage with IBM SVC.

How are customer service and support?

Customer Service: Customer service is on par with all other companies. Technical Support: Tech support is awesome; these guys know what they are doing and rarely will transfer you to another person.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup was very straightforward; 20 minutes and you’re up and running.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented it in house. I would have the vendor go through the first setup with you; after that, a trained monkey can do it.

What was our ROI?

They will beat anyone’s price right now. They are struggling and just need to get product out their doors.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated IBM 820; did not use due to price and the interface was dated.

What other advice do I have?

It’s a very solid product. We are very happy and have seven units currently in production. These outperform any SSD or spinning disk array that I have found so far. The speed is great for such a small footprint. I have not found anything comparable yet.
