From a business continuity aspect it has removed the need for arranging warm-start DR arrangements.

What is most valuable?

The ability to restore files in a matter of seconds or minutes depending on file size and number of files to restore. I have also used the Active Directory Explorer add-on tool for recovering AD objects this is now built-in to Veeam B&R v8.

How has it helped my organization?

We are currently using Veeam B&R to replicate our VMware environment to a disaster recovery site, in the event of a major outage we can fail-over to our DR site. From a business continuity aspect it has removed the need for arranging warm-start DR arrangements.

What needs improvement?

The main area for improvement has come in Version 8, that is native support for tape drives and the ability to archive to tape. Although Veeam B&R v7 allows you to back up your virtual servers to disks. You still need to archive those backups to tapes for long-term storage. Veeam did not provide this facility in earlier versions so we currently use Symantec backup for archiving the "restore points" for long -term storage

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Initial teething problems with replication of data between main site and the DR site but this has since been resolved.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues with stability of the product.

How are customer service and support?

Customer Service:

Good, you log calls initially using a customer portal site.

Technical Support:

Again good, knowledge base articles are available. For problems requiring a specialist - remote sessions with telephone support is made available.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used Commvault which is a good product but this was based on backups of Physical Server using tapes, Veeam B&R was chosen when we made the move towards virtualisation.

How was the initial setup?

We had assistance from Technical Consultants as part of installation/commissioning process.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented Veeam B&R as part of a wider Datacentre modernization project including replacement of the SAN and physical server infrastructure. The Technical Consultants involved were introduced as a result of the tendering process, they were part of the re-seller team and were well versed in the Veeam product at the time.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

At that particular time no as Veeam was and still is the market leaders with backup of virtual servers, other companies are playing catch-up.

What other advice do I have?

I would say you need to think about the long term storage of data and how you intend to archive that data. You need to fully understand the concept of "restore points" and full-incremental vs reverse-incremental backups along with the pro and cons. This information is available on the Veeam website. Finally plan as much as can before installation!

I evaluated CommVault. Veeam was much better priced for the features we needed.

What is most valuable?

The ease of use and intuitiveness of the interface are excellent. Ability of the software to work reliably and consistently is very important. The instant restore option to mount backups and read data from them in a matter of seconds/minutes is very helpful. Ability of Veeam to replicate backups cross-site is critical to my DR strategy.

How has it helped my organization?

Veeam allowed me to eliminate the need for tape backups and replace legacy backup software. The reliability of Veeam is amazing compared to the solution(s) I was using. I am now able to spend 2 minutes a day reviewing backup logs instead of hours troubleshooting errors and calling vendor support. The ability to replicate backups off-site disk to disk also saves a ton of time compared to swapping tapes and manually moving them off-site.

For how long have I used the solution?

1 year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

I used a 3rd party consultant to aid in the deployment however after watching it done I was sorry to have paid someone else to do it. The deployment process appeared to be very straightforward.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

None.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Excellent customer service. I have mostly dealt with tech support.

Technical Support:

Excellent. Always responsive and quick to resolve issues. Though there are rarely issues to resolve.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Yes I previously used Symantec BackupExec which had been in place for years. The product was full of bugs, completely unreliable, and required weekly calls to tech support. I switched to Veeam because of these reasons primarily. The cost of Veeam also came in lower than our previous system.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward. I was able to follow the implementation guide and get the trial setup very quickly. The GUI is intuitive, I've never had an issue figuring out how to use a feature.

What about the implementation team?

I implemented the production instance through a vendor. The vendor was competent and able to configure Veeam properly. However I do not see the need to use a vendor for future Veeam implementations. The Veeam install and setup process if easy to figure out.

What was our ROI?

Invaluable in time saved managing backups. The time I spent managing backups, failed jobs, software errors etc has been almost eliminated by Veeam. I have recovered at least 5 hours a week by switching to Veeam.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I do not recall the exact setup costs. I believe I paid the vendor ~$1,500 to implement Veeam, plus the cost of the Veeam licenses and support. Ongoing cost is simply the cost of renewing support and about 5 minutes of my day.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes, I evaluated CommVault. Veeam was much better priced for the features we needed.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam is an excellent and reliable VM backup tool at a great value compared to other products. I strongly recommend deploying the free trial to get familiar with the product. After using the trial I would be surprised if someone doesn't purchase Veeam.

Straightforward installation, quick support, and effective replication
Pros and Cons
  • "The replication is the most valuable feature for us."
  • "The initial setup of Veeam Backup Replication is straightforward. The process took approximately two days. The setup could be streamlined to take less time."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Veeam Backup Replication only to replicate things from one server to another. We are in the testing phase, not in production. We are only using a small part of the solution.

What is most valuable?

The replication is the most valuable feature for us.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup Replication for approximately three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is perfect.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is very good. The one or two times that we needed something from technical support, they answered quickly and right to the point.

Provides granular restoration, has good replication features, and scales well
Pros and Cons
  • "The granular restoration that it provides for a business application is most valuable. For example, for Exchange, we can restore a single mailbox or email. We can also do SQL Server restoration and bare-metal recovery for operating systems."
  • "Veeam currently lacks features for backing up to network-attached storage. Veeam Backup & Replication agents do not support S3 storage. Only Veeam Backup & Replication server supports S3 storage."

What is our primary use case?

It is for backup and disaster recovery as a service. It is deployed in our data center, and then we sell the service to our customers.

What is most valuable?

The granular restoration that it provides for a business application is most valuable. For example, for Exchange, we can restore a single mailbox or email. We can also do SQL Server restoration and bare-metal recovery for operating systems.

Replication features are very useful for customers. They can recover the services and move from one data center to another.

What needs improvement?

Veeam currently lacks features for backing up to network-attached storage. Veeam Backup & Replication agents do not support S3 storage. Only Veeam Backup & Replication server supports S3 storage.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for about five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Its stability is good. I would rate it an eight out of 10 in terms of stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It scales well. I would rate it an eight out of 10 in terms of scalability.

In our infrastructure, we have hundreds of users. Our customers are from many markets, but its users are from their IT department.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate them an eight out of 10.

How was the initial setup?

It is not complex. It is straightforward. We can deploy it to our customers in about 1 to 2 hours or 1 to 2 days. It depends on a customer's infrastructure.

What about the implementation team?

We deploy it ourselves, and we only use support when we have technical issues with the product. We have three engineers for deployment.

What was our ROI?

It is very difficult to calculate because it is a backup solution. It is not a business service, which makes it very difficult to calculate the ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are fine with its pricing policy.

We provide service for our customers, and the licensing is on a monthly basis. They get licenses, computer resources, and our support. Everything is included in a single price.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others to test this product before buying it. There are many backup products and services, and they have different features and functionalities. We provide our customers a 30-days trial period to test the product for free, and then they can agree or not agree to use this product.

I would rate it an eight out of 10.

User-friendly interface, easy to deploy and use, support for virtualized environments
Pros and Cons
  • "The main feature for Veeam is that it's built primarily for virtualization, such as VMware or Hyper-V."
  • "I would like to see more broad support for other applications such as databases, or other operating systems."

What is our primary use case?

We are a system integrator and we implement backup software solutions for our customers. Veeam is one of the products that we provide.

What is most valuable?

The main feature for Veeam is that it's built primarily for virtualization, such as VMware or Hyper-V.

The interface is user-friendly. It's easy to deploy and easy to manage.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see more broad support for other applications such as databases, or other operating systems. Veeam is currently developing some of these features but they are not as mature as those found on backup products for physical servers. Essentially, integration with products from other vendors should be improved.

This product should be integrated with Kasten for Kubernetes backup. It would be helpful for backing up a container environment.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been working with Veeam Backup & Replication for between five and six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability has always been good with this solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Most of our customers do not have a large virtual environment. Veeam is capable of quickly scaling up or scaling out to meet the requirements of our customers.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support from Veeam is quite helpful. They have a capable team.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also use Commvault, Veritas, and IBM Spectrum Protect.

The IBM console is definitely more complex in terms of implementation and monitoring. The user interface for Veeam is better.

The support available is similar from all of the vendors. Most of the backup software and principles are quite similar and we can handle problems with the help of support.

How was the initial setup?

There were no complications with the initial setup.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Several licensing schemes are available.

What other advice do I have?

My advice for anybody who is implementing Veeam is to learn about the various licensing schemes. There are several available to choose from.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of this product is its very fast recovery.

What needs improvement?

I would like a solution for SAP systems to be included in the next release.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for around ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is stable and reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This solution is easy to scale.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was quite straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

I implemented through an integrator.

What other advice do I have?

This solution is very user-friendly and easily recoverable. I would rate this product as seven out of ten.

Effectively coordinate data with limited intervention and provide alerts to issues
Pros and Cons
  • "I know it's not exactly a feature, but I accept it works and it's easy to use. With the Veeam Backup & Replication, we have no problems in managing restore. Obviously, the most important thing about backup software. I used to say that every backup software can make backups, but only good ones can make a restore."
  • "It's hard to answer because managing cloud storage in our version could be better, but now that they have improved it in the recent version, I cannot say it's a better point because I know it should be already fixed."

What is our primary use case?

We use Veeam Backup & Replication to backup, restore and replicate data across our storage locations.

How has it helped my organization?

I know it's not exactly a feature, but I accept it works and it's easy to use. With Veeam Backup & Replication, we have no problems in managing restore. Obviously, the most important thing about backup software. I used to say that every backup software can make backups, but only good ones can make a restore.

What is most valuable?

The features that we use most of Veeam Backup & Replication are SQL backup and tape backup. For us, tape backup is really important because we have to keep all our data on the site. We cannot use it for our sites in terms of policies or a cloud backup. We are using tape backup as a secondary repository. We use the tapes regularly. We also make a regular list of tests for tapes and are quite happy with how we are managing the process.

What needs improvement?

It's hard to answer because managing cloud storage in our version could be better, but now that they have improved it in the recent version, I cannot say it's a better point because I know it should be already fixed.

My point of view is not general but in particular because I can only tell you about the things that we need. For the things that we need, I mostly SQL backup, we have no issues with Veeam Backup & Replication. It's difficult to answer because I am waiting to try new features in the next version that we plan to install next month. So, I can't answer before I try these additional features that I will find in the next version.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup & Replication for the past four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For our space, we are using not only Veeam Backup & Replication but also Veeam ONE for monitoring, not only backups but for the environment. We have alerts if we have any problems with the backups. The only problem we are facing sometimes with Windows backup is that it is not large enough for periodic full backups, but this is not the problem of Veeam Backup & Replication, it is a problem of our environment. Veeam Backup & Replication end synthetic backups the following day without requiring a configuration plan and full backup.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

When we had Windows problems, Veeam Backup & Replication had no problem at all. It also manages other problems with no intervention.

How are customer service and technical support?

We used the service of the Veeam technical support once on the fifth day after installation, and it was a good experience. But that was a few years ago, so I can't tell you how their support works now. Fortunately, we didn't need to consult for the rest of the year.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have used IBM Cloud Backup before, and one of the reasons that pushed us to change the Veeam Backup & Replication was that IBM Cloud Backup was really difficult to use. We have been using it for almost 10 years only to visualize the environment. When we started with IBM Cloud Backup, we also had physical servers. We currently don't have any physical servers. This is another reason we moved to a new generation backup solution.

How was the initial setup?

Veeam Backup & Replication is absolutely straightforward. We had some issues with the initial setup, but it is normal. The initial hardware configuration of the tape library was unclear because we are using a fibre genetic library, so we needed to configure our storage as a network, to have a Windows Server point, exact point contact to the library. However, once the Windows Server manages the tape library, Veeam Backup & Replication has no problems at all. We are using Windows drivers and not native Veeam drivers to manage the library.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's a proper price, as it isn't an issue for what Veeam Backup & Replication is giving us. Obviously, we are paying licensing for our physical VMware environment. It also depends on how the VMware environment is on the side. We have a few very big nodes. So, we need a few licenses and maybe if people had more nodes and sockets and each node was managing less information, machine supplies could be different.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
