We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I like the analytics that help us optimize compatibility. Whereas Azure Advisor tells us what we have to do, Turbonomic has automation which actually does those things. That means we don't have to be present to get them done and simplifies our IT engineers' jobs.""The automation and orchestration components are definitely the best part, as you can tell it what it can do and when, and just let it be.""The system automatically sizes and moves resources based on the needs of the applications.""It became obvious to us that there was a lot more being offered in the product that we could leverage to ensure our VMware environment was running efficiently.""Rightsizing is valuable. Its recommendations are pretty good.""With over 2500 ESX VMs, including 1500+ XenDesktop VDI desktops, hosted over two datacentres and 80+ vSphere hosts, firefighting has become something of the past.""Turbonomic can show us if we're not using some of our storage volumes efficiently in AWS. For example, if we've over-provisioned one of our virtual machines to have dedicated IOPs that it doesn't need, Turbonomic will detect that and tell us.""My favorite part of the solution is the automation scheduling. Being able to choose when actions happen, and how they happen..."

"The flexibility is the product's most valuable feature.""The most valuable feature is that it allows us to compare the billing between the clouds.""The way the dashboard works with the main orchestrator to combine different types of cloud providers is helpful.""This solution has made us aware that we are over-provisioning our virtual machines.""The product provides excellent daily reports.""The most valuable feature is the metering capability.""The most valuable feature is that it has a very easy and adaptive look and feel, compared with some other cloud solutions.""It doesn't take long to develop an automation blueprint. You need about half an hour, and then you can install or deploy it on several systems. That was our first great advantage in the project because we urgently needed to deploy across many different systems."

Cons
"The issue for us with the automation is we are considering starting to do the hot adds, but there are some problems with Windows Server 2019 and hot adds. It is a little buggy. So, if we turn that on with a cluster that has a lot of Windows 2019 Servers, then we would see a blue screen along with a lot of applications as well. Depending on what you are adding, cores or memory, it doesn't necessarily even take advantage of that at that moment. A reboot may be required, and we can't do that until later. So, that decreases the benefit of the real-time. For us, there is a lot of risk with real-time.""Remove the need for special in-house knowledge and development.""In Azure, it's not what you're using. You purchase the whole 8 TB disk and you pay for it. It doesn't matter how much you're using. So something that I've asked for from Turbonomic is recommendations based on disk utilization. In the example of the 8 TB disk where only 200 GBs are being used, based on the history, there should be a recommendation like, "You can safely use a 500 GB disk." That would create a lot of savings.""Additional interfaces would be helpful.""They could add a few more reports. They could also be a bit more granular. While they have reports, sometimes it is hard to figure out what you are looking for just by looking at the date.""While the product is fairly intuitive and easy to use once you learn it, it can be quite daunting until you have undergone a bit of training.""The deployment process is a little tricky. It wasn't hard for me because I have pretty in-depth knowledge of Kubernetes, and their software runs on Kubernetes. To deploy it or upgrade it, you have to be able to follow steps and use the Kubernetes command line, or you'll need someone to come in and do it for you.""After running this solution in production for a year, we may want a more granular approach to how we utilize the product because we are planning to use some of its metrics to feed into our financial system."

More IBM Turbonomic Cons →

"The product needs some investment in configuration. I would like to see better and more optimized configuration in the tool's future releases.""Better integration with other VMware toolsets would be beneficial.""The knowledge base is not available for the engineers, which is something that needs to be improved.""There are some kinks to resolve with the Web GUI user interface, as it freezes at times.""I would like to have an easy way of modifying the reference data that is used for the purposes of estimating the total billing.""I would like it if they could provide their customers with more qualified support.""If you haven't established a vSphere cluster and you only have a single server to integrate, you can't deploy any service.""The pricing model is complicated and would be more predictable if it were simplified."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We felt the pricing was very fair for the product. It is in no way prohibitive for larger deployments, unlike other similar product on the market."
  • "Contact the Turbonomic sales team, explain your needs and what you're looking to monitor. They will get a pre-sales SE on the phone and together work up a very accurate quote."
  • "What I can advise is to trial the product, taking advantage of the Turbonomic pre-sales implemention support and kickstart training."
  • "Licensing is per socket, so load up on the cores rather than a lot of lower core CPUs."
  • "You should understand the cost of your physical servers and how much time and money you are spending year over year on expanding your virtual farm."
  • "Price is a big one. VMTurbo was very competitively priced."
  • "If you're a super-small business, it may be a little bit pricey for you... But in large, enterprise companies where money is, maybe, less of an issue, Turbonomic is not that expensive. I can't imagine why any big company would not buy it, for what it does."
  • "It was an annual buy-in. You basically purchase it based on your host type stuff. The buy-in was about 20K, and the annual maintenance is about $3,000 a year."
