We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"This product now allows us to migrate virtual machines between nodes as if we had a dedicated $100,000 SAN in the mix without the additional cost and management of the SAN.""It has reduced our overall maintenance and overhead by having to only maintain physical boxes for one cluster instead of having to manage physical boxes for two clusters.""StarWind allowed us to deploy highly available shared storage within our budget.""Integration with Microsoft clustering has been perfect, allowing us to leverage our investment in MS server licensing to the fullest.""The ease of reaching the support team and their promptness for support is great.""The configuration is so much simpler than that of a traditional SAN with fewer points of failure to worry about.""The best feature is its ease of installation and integration within a current infrastructure.""Starwind support is excellent. They are very fast and have very good knowledge of Starwind and Hyper-V Cluster software."

"The size of the hardware is what we need because it is very good for small configurations.""It is stable and scalable.""Both the scalability and stability of this solution are excellent.""The most useful feature is the solution's automation in terms of how we are able to spin up a certain workload in real-time when we are doing R&D.""I like that you can add other types of services.""The consolidation of the management in one control point is the most valuable. The whole infrastructure management is consolidated in just one console point. The documentation is also pretty good."

"I like that Scale Computing HCR is slimmed down and gives me the features I need and not features that I don't need.""The most valuable features are the appliance-type feel and that you don't need additional licenses as everything is built-in.""The most valuable feature of Scale Computing HC3 is if one of the devices fails, you won't even notice, the service maintains operation. The customers don't have to waste two, or three days on delays. Additionally, you do not have to waste time with recovery software, it is a lot easier.""I rate Scale Computing support 10 out of 10. They're accessible and responsive.""The solution is scalable.""The initial setup is pretty straightforward.""The most valuable feature of the solution is the nice GUI."

Cons
"Currently, the StarWind management console is a bit clunky to navigate and isn't the most user-intuitive interface.""The most disappointing side of the application is the free edition. There used to be GUI attached. That has recently changed to only CLI management of the application.""For the StarWind VSA vSphere solution, I would like to see a simpler and automated virtual machine installation process in terms of network settings.""I had to buy upgraded support, which was not a problem, but it wasn't a prorated amount, so I paid for the support, the full upgrade, but I only got a couple of months out of it because it was only good until renewal time.""Scaling the product is fairly easy except for the computing aspect. It would entail another appliance. While not a show stopper, it isn't as easy as dropping in a few extra SSDs.""The documentation is good yet is still lacking in a few areas.""I wish there was online support because email return takes a long time and a faster solution should be found.""StarWind relies on the underlying OS to manage the "SAN files" whether that would be a RAID volume, software RAID (such as LVM), etc. It would be useful if StarWind could incorporate the actual physical drive management inside of the solution, similar to Storage Spaces Direct."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"The licensing policy needs to be improved. They have a licensing policy based on the number of CPU sockets. Nowadays what has happened is that the license they are trying to move is based on the number of CPU cores. With the advancement in technology there are now more cores in a single CPU. It's been very challenging in terms of managing the license around everything. Today we have a processor with 24 and 32 cores on the same physical CPU.""The main issue is the initial investment. It is an expensive product, and it should be cheaper. It should also be easier to use and manage. The professional service for this solution is quite complex and expensive.""It is not user-friendly, and it is very difficult to operate. You have to have a deep understanding of the technical details of the infrastructure to implement it. When you compare it with VMware, it is totally different because the graphical user interface is not that easy to understand. It is not intuitive. To use it, you have to read a lot of documentation and even understand what is going on behind the solution. It is not for someone who has a little bit of knowledge. Currently, it is too complex. I need something that is easy to implement. It should have a basic configuration as well as a complex configuration.""It should be more user-friendly, in my opinion.""This product is not so stable. Maybe it is just not mature enough in its development.""The cloud deployment could be improved."

More Red Hat Hyperconverged Infrastructure Cons →

"I would like bigger clusters with more than eight nodes.""The product could use a better control center.""The product struggles to cope with bigger workloads. In the next release, I'd like some backup solutions to be added.""Scale HC3 improvements would involve literally fixing up the replication.""Scale Computing HC3 said in an announcement they were going to integrate with a backup service which would be good. If they could do this it would be beneficial.""The snapshot technology takes up 500 times more space compared to other solutions.""I've had so many issues with the sales team when I was looking to make some improvements, and improve the performance. They would create so many excuses to force me to buy new nodes all the time and not let me add more memory to each node."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "Red Hat Hyperconverged Infrastructure is an open-sourced, low-cost solution with full features."
  • "It is quite pricey."
  • More Red Hat Hyperconverged Infrastructure Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "I pay for Scale Computing HC3 and it includes customer service for one year. We paid for an additional year for customer service but that includes the updates and everything for the software. Additionally, the licensing is for Windows, which is the same for everybody."
  • "I give the pricing a nine out of ten."
  • "rate HC3's pricing a five out of ten since it is affordable."

    Overview

StarWind Virtual SAN provides high availability and fault tolerance for virtualized environments without the need for dedicated SAN hardware. It allows for real-time replication between servers, shared storage for Hyper-V clusters, and enables vMotion and High Availability features for VMware vSphere. The solution reduces costs and leverages existing hardware while providing a scalable and reliable infrastructure. Valuable features include ease of use, scalability, top-tier support, hardware agnosticism, and the ability to use off-the-shelf standard servers to increase storage space. StarWind VSAN has helped organizations improve performance, data availability, and data security while reducing downtime and providing cost-saving storage options.

Red Hat Hyperconverged Infrastructure - based on our leading OpenStack and virtualization platforms - provides co-located, scalable, software-defined compute and storage, driven by Red Hat Ansible Automation on economical, industry-standard hardware.

HC3 is an appliance-based hyperconverged infrastructure solution. HC3 combines servers, storage, virtualization, and backup/disaster recovery into a single appliance. This hyperconvergence of technologies radically simplifies IT infrastructure making it easier to implement and manage and significantly reduces the total cost of ownership of infrastructure. The HC3 hyperconverged appliance approach allows seamless, non-disruptive infrastructure scale out and automated, non-disruptive software and firmware updates. Our customers choose HC3 to reduce complexity and cost from IT infrastructure so they can focus their IT administration on improving applications and process rather than managing and maintaining complex infrastructure.
