Executive Summary
Updated on Jun 27, 2023

We performed a comparison between New Relic and Elastic Observability based on real PeerSpot user reviews in five categories. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.

  • Ease of Deployment: Users have reported that the initial setup process for New Relic is generally simple and requires fewer commands and browser configuration, while Elastic Observability's complexity is dependent on the environment and involves a distributed nature and multiple cluster setup that can be more challenging. While some users received professional services for New Relic, Elastic Observability demanded a technical team of six to seven people.
  • Features: New Relic provides comprehensive application data, trustworthy monitoring, precise alert systems, and transparent pricing. On the other hand, Elastic Observability is effortless to set up, includes machine learning, and enables users to monitor performance using metrics. It also has an Elastic server and numerous supplementary plugins.
  • Pricing: New Relic's pricing is based on a monthly or yearly license with additional fees for extra features or data ingestion, while Elastic Observability's pricing varies depending on the type of license and usage, with some components embedded in the license or even open source. Elastic Observability's cost can increase with increased usage, and certain features require payment. The pricing is deemed reasonable by some users, but others find it expensive.
  • Service and Support: While opinions on New Relic's customer service are mixed, Elastic Observability generally receives positive feedback. Customers appreciate the strong tech support and helpful online community offered by Elastic Observability. Some customers have not needed support from Elastic Observability, but still find the documentation and team skill level to be satisfactory.
  • ROI: Some users have found New Relic APM to have a questionable ROI, while others have seen returns. In contrast, Elastic Observability has been effective in reducing incidents and overheads and providing comprehensive issue visibility at a lower cost.

Comparison Results: Users prefer Elastic Observability over New Relic due to its comprehensive visualization and metrics, better control over backend calls, and AI integration, including simple-to-use machine learning. Despite its straightforward setup, users suggest that New Relic could improve error debugging, correlation with logs, historical data retention, and AI and machine learning capabilities.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The price is very less expensive compared to the other solutions.""Elastic APM has plenty of features, such as the Elastic server for Kibana and many additional plugins. It's a comprehensive tool when used as a logging platform.""The ability to ensure that the data is searchable and maintainable is highly valuable for our purposes.""I have built a mini business intelligence system based on Elastic Observability.""The solution has been stable in our usage.""The architecture and system's stability are simple.""Elastic Observability significantly improves incident response time by providing quick access to logs and data across various sources. For instance, searching for specific keywords in logs spanning over a month from multiple data sources can be completed within seconds.""Machine learning is the most valuable feature of this solution."

"It has given us better insight into the performance of the system.""We are able to drill down and see what is going on in the system.""The most valuable features are the dashboards and tracing.""The VPN is one of the solution's most valuable features for us.""The most valuable feature is application monitoring.""We like the performance of the product.""It offers helpful user metrics so we can learn more about the user experience.""We detect issues using dashboards that we built on New Relic."

Cons
"More web features could be added to the product.""Elastic Observability needs to improve the retrieval of logs and metrics from all the instances.""Elastic APM's visualization is not that great compared to other tools. It's number of metrics is very low.""Elastic Observability’s price could be improved.""They need more skills in the market. There are not enough skills in the market. It is not pervasive enough on the market, in my opinion. In other words, there isn't a big enough user base.""There is room for improvement regarding its APM capabilities.""The interface could be improved.""The tool's scalability involves a more complex implementation process. It requires careful calculations to determine the number of nodes needed, the specifications of each node, and the configuration of hot, warm, and cold zones for data storage. Additionally, managing log retention policies adds further complexity. The solution's pricing also needs to be cheaper."

More Elastic Observability Cons →

"They should bring the pricing down to be more competitive.""It is complicated, especially in how you interpret the data that it provides. If it had a bit more canned, out-of-the-box features, especially some of the reporting features, that would be more useful.""New Relic APM is a good tool, and it has a database of failures, but it could use a list of customer-specific failures. New Relic APM should be able to give my company advanced analytics through AI.""The connectivity between legacy and newer cloud applications is not great.""The solution should include more detailed reports for SQL database requests.""They could improve the education process and how people understand that these tools are very technical. Right now, if someone was to pick it up from day one, it is a very steep learning curve.""Documentation could be improved in New Relic APM, so users would have more clarity on configuring the dashboard. If New Relic gave better guidelines, users would find it easier to understand the metrics and features of New Relic APM. Another area for improvement is integration with Kubernetes. Currently, the process isn't user-friendly. It's challenging and lacks documentation for users to understand how to integrate New Relic APM with Kubernetes quickly. With multiple levels of Kubernetes dockers and other DBs on different clouds, it's tricky to gather all into New Relic APM on a single dashboard. What I'd like to see in the next version of New Relic APM is a single dashboard where you can easily view which applications fall under specific APMs. If there's a search feature where you can type in a keyword to find out if an APM is related to a particular application, that would be great.""The UX/UI design of New Relic APM could be improved. The solution currently has some slow pages in terms of loading and viewing the pages, for example, the reports. The reports and other pages take a long time to load."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "So far, there are just the standard licensing fees. Several of the components are embedded in the license or are even open source. They're even free depending on what you use, which makes it even more appealing to someone that is discussing pricing of the solution."
  • "There are two types: cloud and SaaS. They charge based on data ingestion, ingest rate, hard retention, and warm retention. I believe it costs around $25,000 annually to ingest 30GB of data daily. That is the SaaS version. There is also a self-managed license where the customer manages their own infrastructure on-prem. In such cases, there are three license tiers that respectively cost $5,000 annually per node, $7,000 per node, and $12,500 per node."
  • "Pricing is one of those situations where the more you use it, the more you pay."
  • "The price of Elastic Observability is expensive."
  • "Users have to pay for some features, like the alerts on different channels, because they are unavailable in different source versions."
  • "One needs to pay for the licenses, and it is an annual subscription model right now."
  • "Since we are a huge company, Elastic Observability is an affordable solution for us."
  • "We will buy a premium license after POC."

  • "New Relic is either free with low retention and minimal functionalities, or expensive with full options and retention."
  • "The monthly cost os $1000 per server per month, but it could be even more. We pay about $250 for the server, and then New Relic wants over $1000 to give us statistics on those servers."
  • "Cost is significant with a lot of extras."
  • "It would be nice if we could buy it annually instead of monthly."
  • "If it’s the right tool, it doesn’t matter what it costs because you’re going to get it back many-fold from your productivity."
  • "I recommend using the free version of New Relic. If you like the free version and understand its importance for your company, you can move to the trial. Then, you can migrate to the paid version."
  • "There is a picture which goes to your browser and it monitors requests from other users. However, it's impossible to use now because the price is very high. The feature is very nice, but I tried it during the trial period, and the current price makes it impossible to use."
  • "They gave us aggressive discounts when they were brought in for the first time, but they have also kept them for the year-on-year renewals, which has been absolutely fine."
