We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is a good storage solution.""It's easy to move files around, even to, for example, SharePoint.""It provides a way to granularly choose which folders from the internet you want to sync to your computer. It is really useful for people who are working on teams that are working with files that are frequently changing. You can go in and pretty clearly see what changes have been made. It gives you a constant feed.""You can really do a lot of cool things with it in terms of being able to co-author and share documents with users that are not in your organization.""Egnyte Connect is a great application to save files.""It is scalable and stable.""From a small firm perspective, Egnyte Connect is simple, it is easy to get users up and running the same day, and I have nothing negative to say about the software. I can't speak to how Egnyte Connect would operate in a midsize company or even a large Fortune 500 company, but, from our perspective as a small business, it is fantastic."

"The security feature is valuable.""Ability to store files of any type.""The search feature is valuable.""SharePoint has an option where you can open files on the browser, whereby more than five people can make amendments to one Excel online file.""Helps with document collaboration and workflow.""The ability to have version control and co-editing is vital to our workflows.""It improved transparency around work products.""What I like about SharePoint is that they keep up with a lot of updates, and they bring out new features. I also like that the system is integrated with the Microsoft 365 suite of apps."

Cons
"It would be nice to see an integration of using an active directory to validate and authenticate users on our end as well as on the client user's end.""Before, when we were starting to use Egnyte, we were struggling with a lot of bugs with Egnyte desktop sync.""As of right now, I have everything that I and my team need.""If this solution had a better ability to search, that would be helpful. In addition, if there was an ability to collaborate, that would also be a benefit. At present, the vision control is had because if someone gets out of it, it locks. And, whoever saves last overrides everyone's work.""You cannot delete a file when you have uploaded it in error.""The issue of my authorization token expiring pretty quickly was pretty annoying. On pretty much every update, it would expire on every computer. On every computer update, at the first opportunity, it would expire. When my computer got updated or the authorization got cut, my saved drives would get messed up. So, I had to reconnect them all. I was never able to set up a useful drive system with my local computer with Egnyte Connect. It would be a big improvement if there was a cached system so that when it loses connection, it can still save what kind of connections were set up, and when it reconnects, it repopulates all those. I don't know if that's even possible, but that's the feature I'd want."

More Egnyte Cons →

"Make it more intuitive.""The initial setup is complex and has room for improvement.""There are some limitations on storage.""Integration needs to be more straightforward, particularly with Azure. SharePoint also needs a more comprehensive introductory course for users.""There's a challenge with desktop applications synchronizing with online documents in real-time. If someone is working on a document in the desktop version of Excel, for example, and someone else is editing the same document online, the changes won't sync immediately. That's the only real challenge we've encountered.""The product must provide more automation.""SharePoint sometimes cannot handle the amount of co-editing that we do.""Search can be improved a lot because we are always trying to compare it with Google Search. Beyond that, it would be helpful to tag the documents."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "I do not have experience with the pricing of this solution."
  • "As far as I understand, licenses are associated with the Egnyte platform. There aren't any licenses associated with Egnyte Connect."
  • More Egnyte Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "As usual, Microsoft’s licensing structures don’t really seem to fit the needs of their products. This leads to always paying for a project you will never use fully or always be adding to."
  • "Licensing can be by server or by seat."
  • "It is very expensive."
  • "The data classification and search elements are cheap."
  • "The replacement costs for it are cheaper if you use only SharePoint."
  • "We have purchased add-ons to handle multiple site collections, form creation, and design."
  • "The cost is expensive, but worthwhile."
  • "The pricing works for us."

At Mediacurrent we often get requests to compare Drupal to other platforms used for intranet sites and social business platforms (like https://dev.twitter.com/ for example). This is often referred to as “Social Business Software”, which has grown in popularity in recent years. I decided to do a round-up of a couple of the more well known platforms and compare their products to Drupal. In this roundup we will be comparing Jive, Sharepoint and Drupal Commons. Drupal Commons is a popular distribution created by Acquia to compete with some of these other proprietary platforms. There are many other options out there, commercial and otherwise, to compare with Drupal but I want to focus on Jive and Sharepoint for a couple of reasons. I chose Jive because it is one of the leading competitors in this space in respect to market share. Next, I chose Sharepoint because I have some history with Sharepoint. This experience dates back to when I built www.adhe.edu with Sharepoint 2007 a few years ago. I subsequently wrote this blog entry about my experience shortly after joining Mediacurrent. This roundup will also act as a refresher for those who read my original “Drupal vs. Sharepoint” blog. Yammer, which was recently bought by Microsoft and is the tool we currently use for office communication will also get some mentions throughout this article. As I went through and tested each of these tools I used three main criteria in my evaluation Cost Ability to Customize Overall features… Read more →

    Overview
Egnyte is a hybrid cloud storage service that provides online file sharing, file transfer, and cross-office syncing solutions to small, medium, and large businesses. The company specializes in providing businesses with customizable solutions using both cloud-only technology and local storage. Businesses using Egnyte's services benefit from increased efficiency, reliable security, and removal of communication barriers. Egnyte, like many of its competitors, features customizable services that help businesses stay organized and productive while maintaining a high level of security. In order to provide uninterrupted levels of security, Egnyte only allows access to files though certificate-based trusted devices via a two-step login verification process. Egnyte offers businesses control over its services with the ability to monitor use and access information through a single, user-friendly control panel, which is accessible in any web browser. The Egnyte platform is able to integrate with local storage, providing businesses with the option of using cloud-based storage or local devices, depending upon security preferences. Companies with satellite locations or remote employees benefit from Egnyte's flexible deployment models, scalable file sharing, and high speed collaboration capabilities regardless of changes in bandwidth limitations across locations. Additionally, Egnyte's platform makes use of hybrid storage synchronization, which reduces bandwidth saturation and increases performance. Egnyte appeals to growing businesses because it offers customizable services and flexible file sharing solutions. Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby's International Realty, with over 275 agents and employees spread throughout the Atlanta metro area, was struggling to increase the efficiency of staff communication. After working with Egnyte, Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby's International Realty was able to develop a hybrid file sharing infrastructure that allowed for the syncing and sharing of large files, protection of confidential information, and a reduction in bandwidth use.
