We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We are able to do maintenance by bringing down one node at a time, rather than having to schedule a complete shutdown.""The most useful aspect is the hyper-converged SD SAN and the ease to expand it by just adding cheap SSD or NVME disks.""The product has improved the ability to mimic physical SAN environments to demo scenarios and troubleshoot problems.""It includes every feature that a traditional SAN offers and so much more.""It eliminates the use of expensive physical shared storage.""The StarWind products have enabled our organization to modernize stations where larger and more expensive equipment was not an option.""The management and monitoring have been very easy since the solution's dashboard is very simple and user-friendly.""StarWind saved us about 80% of our storage costs over our old solution."

"Dell EMC VxFlex Ready Nodes can support what we call a heterogeneous environment. So you can have VMware workloads, Hyper-V workloads, bare metal Red Hat workloads, Kubernetes workloads all on the same cluster. You're not pigeonholed into either all bare metal or all virtualized. So it supports basically any platform.""The most valuable features of Dell VxFlex Ready Nodes are the ease of acquisition."

More Dell VxFlex Ready Nodes Pros →

"It is easier to manage compared to the other vendors.""Very good in-line compression.""The nice thing about it is that it truly integrates with the cloud, so I can move my volumes bi-directionally in and out of the cloud.""I love InfoSite. That gets you a lot of good detailed information.""HPE's InfoSight software, which does the comparative analysis and artificial intelligence built-in in the box, and with Nimble they do well against the competition. Additionally, the dashboards are good.""The product has cut down a lot of service tickets. Earlier, people complained about slowness.""The solution is useful for taking storage snapshots, has high performance, and the CASL architecture is good for optimizing workloads.""The solution is easy to use."

Cons
"I think the setup could be streamlined a bit.""I would definitely like to see quite a bit more on the monitoring side of things.""New versions of this solution should be tested more thoroughly before the release as we had a few problems with one version due to a bug.""A great feature would be a wizard and to include a new disk in the SAN. At the moment, including a new disk requires several steps - some that must be done at the OS level and others in each node.""I found that certain browsers are not fully compatible with the administration web access portal.""It should reclaim white spaces after big files are deleted.""I'd love to see native export of metrics (via Prometheus or something of that nature) to allow us to get more metrics available on our existing dashboard software.""The only point they should improve is the amount of documentation available for the user, especially in the first preliminary phase in which we were testing the product on our own."

"Dell VxFlex Ready Nodes is a little less sophisticated than some of the other solutions out there. A full-blown cloud foundation has a lot more to it.""From a technical perspective, it's a pretty rock solid solution. I would say the only area for improvement is around its price."

More Dell VxFlex Ready Nodes Cons →

"HPE Nimble Storage dHCI only works with a hypervisor like VMware. There are plenty of other hypervisors that HP doesn't support. This is an area for improvement.""The initial setup is a little bit complicated.""HPE Nimble Storage dHCI currently is promoting only VMware as a hypervisor, whereas if they can look into other OSs, such as KVM or Red Hat, it would be an improvement.""The only issue I'm really running into is we have a SQL server that we're having a lot of high IO latency on one of my drives and it's my data drive from my SQL server. It's not really giving me any good information as to where that latency is coming from, so that's what I'm trying to track down and troubleshoot.""I rate Nimble one out of 10 for ease of setup. Setting up Nimble Storage was a nightmare. It took us three months to deal with all the kinks and bugs. We had two people from HPE assisting us and two from our team.""Their documentation needs to be simpler to read yet more detailed so it's easy to compare models and easier for clients to pick.""Nimble Storage's integration with the management software could be better.""HPE Nimble Storage dHCI's website does not open properly or work consistently."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "Dell VxFlex Ready Nodes is a cheaper solution than Nutanix and HyperFlex."
  • More Dell VxFlex Ready Nodes Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "I think it's priced right and it's extremely intelligent."
  • "The customers have found the solution to be expensive. However, when compared to the competition the price is reasonable."
  • "The cost of the licensing is reasonable."
  • "The price of HPE Nimble Storage dHCI is expensive."
  • "HPE Nimble Storage dHCI is much cheaper than the competition and has value proposition. Customers can see an ROI in three months. There are no additional costs, and VMware licenses can be reutilized."
  • "With the features that HPE Nimble Storage dHCI provides, I cannot say its pricing is more."
  • "The product is very affordable."
  • "I would rate the licensing model a three out of ten, where one is extremely expensive, and ten is cheap."

The solution reduces costs and leverages existing hardware while providing a scalable and reliable infrastructure. Valuable features include ease of use, scalability, top-tier support, hardware agnosticism, and the ability to use off-the-shelf standard servers to increase storage space. StarWind VSAN has helped organizations improve performance, data availability, and data security while reducing downtime and providing cost-saving storage options.

VxRack FLEX and VxFlex Ready Nodes, also known as the Flex family, create a server-based SAN by combining virtualization software, known as VxFlex OS, with Dell EMC PowerEdge servers to deliver flexibility, scalability, and capacity on demand. Local storage resources are combined to create a virtual pool of block storage with varying performance tiers. The platform enables you to start small (with as little as four nodes) and scale incrementally. The Flex family provides enterprise-grade data protection, multi-tenant capabilities, and add-on enterprise features such as QoS, thin provisioning, and snapshots. VxFlex OS is the key enabler and provides an unmatched combination of performance, resiliency and flexibility to address enterprise data center needs. The unique features of VxFlex OS make it an excellent complement to Kubernetes for stateful applications, such as databases, continuous integration, logging and monitoring platforms.
