We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The primary purpose of this software is to create a virtual SAN between local storage on Hyper-V hosts. I find this feature most valuable since it accomplishes this quite well.""The most valuable feature is the fact that the nodes are Active/Active, and allow us to do upgrades on any node without any downtime.""User friendly interface and straight forward implementation.""It provides shared storage to multiple hypervisor hosts. Times had changed, however. StarWind Virtual SAN is the “software replaces hardware” for SAN. We have access control and CCTV systems up and running using Microsoft clustering and shared storage""We have been able to use more on-prem hardware to reduce cost and also use old disks that we do not trust enough for ordinary RAID or usage.""This product now allows us to migrate virtual machines between nodes as if we had a dedicated $100,000 SAN in the mix without the additional cost and management of the SAN.""StarWind vSAN was very easy to integrate into our system and ran flawlessly during our entire use time.""PowerShell library is pretty good feature as I created with APC PowerChute a script to put volumes on maintenance mode then turning off the StarWind nodes together with the VM and Hosts when UPS reaches 15 percent, this way after a blackout or electrical problems when turning servers on again, there is no issues for syncing or data loss due to energy interrupts."

"I have found the most important features of Dell EMC vSAN Ready Nodes are the capacity to manage the storage because the storage is built in the servers. The type of profiles you can attribute to the storage is a benefit. You can manage the storage by profiles. Overall the solution is a good speed and performance.""Dell EMC vSAN Ready Nodes is scalable""The most valuable feature is the set of user tools that are available.""They are heading in the right direction and moving to integrate everything with a hybrid cloud, and moving workloads back and forth.""If I consider the overall product, I would say that it is an excellent solution that offers very good performance and stability.""The solution immediately expands storage area when you add nodes.""The most valuable feature of Dell vSAN Ready Nodes is the flexibility of the nodes. Additionally, if there are any critical issues they update us through emails. The issues are taken care of remotely on the system.""It is easy to install."

"The nice thing about it is that it truly integrates with the cloud, so I can move my volumes bi-directionally in and out of the cloud.""We have the ability to increase the storage without any additional costs.""Artificial intelligence is built into the product. If there's a failure, HP support will proactively call the client about the issue.""Simply being able to move objects and the duplication feature have been quite effective.""With regards to performance, configuration, and longevity it is upgradeable, which means it has a good TCO rate. These are valuable aspects to me.""I love InfoSite. That gets you a lot of good detailed information.""The product has cut down a lot of service tickets. Earlier, people complained about slowness.""It is easier to manage compared to the other vendors."

Cons
"Updates seem to be non-existent.""StarWind really needs to market its product more.""I would definitely like to see quite a bit more on the monitoring side of things.""There is no Italian-language version of the software available.""Security on the ISCSI protocol could be improved by adding features like OS-type control access, especially for the data center environment.""The Command Center, a free guest VM for management and monitoring, leaves something to be desired. It could have more accurate real-time information and better reporting visuals, which seem to be an afterthought.""I did not see any indication that StarWinds vSAN is a usable solution with non-GUI instances of Hyper-V.""There needs to be more visibility on how long the cloud replication will take as there is no current ETA."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"Compatibility with other hardware nodes needs to be improved.""There is room for improvement in the maintenance pricing. Maintenance isn't difficult, but the prices are high and ridiculous. Some customers feel it is better to go with a new solution rather than renew this one.""Dell vSAN Ready Nodes must be flexible since it is complex in designing concepts. It needs to improve stability. The product should integrate with the public cloud.""The Dell VxRail solution is based on vSAN Ready Nodes, but the Dell VxRail is fully automated. It would be helpful if this automation feature could be added to the Dell vSAN Ready Nodes. For example, we need to install VMware ESXi, and manually expand the cluster.""The solution doesn't scale.""This product is not sufficiently scalable.""Dell vSAN Ready Nodes' deployment is complex.""The power switch on the hardware is located in a poor location where it can accidentally be pushed. In an update, they should solve this issue so people do not push it accidentally to have their service go down. A possible solution is the switch should be inside."

More Dell vSAN Ready Nodes Cons →

"The product does not support file services.""HPE Nimble Storage dHCI's website does not open properly or work consistently.""It can be made cheaper.""HPE Nimble Storage dHCI only works with a hypervisor like VMware. There are plenty of other hypervisors that HP doesn't support. This is an area for improvement.""Their documentation needs to be simpler to read yet more detailed so it's easy to compare models and easier for clients to pick.""I rate Nimble one out of 10 for ease of setup. Setting up Nimble Storage was a nightmare. It took us three months to deal with all the kinks and bugs. We had two people from HPE assisting us and two from our team.""Cost-wise, this solution is slightly more expensive than other hyperconverged solutions.""HPE Nimble Storage dHCI currently is promoting only VMware as a hypervisor, whereas if they can look into other OSs, such as KVM or Red Hat, it would be an improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
