We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is a scalable solution.""The solution is easy to use and the duplication is quite good.""Commvault HyperScale X is also a good choice for regulations that require the backup system to be isolated from the rest of the infrastructure.""We switched to Commvault because we were looking to centralize management. This reduced IT administrator time as well as providing stability and reliability for data backups in a single console.""Cloud integration.""We use Commvault Command Center for backups and restores and for the creation of new clients. We use it for other functionalities as well. In terms of VMware, I can go directly to the Command Center, enter VMware, and I can search it directly. Command Center is very useful and it can be used for more advanced techniques.""It is easy to use and stable. It delivers what has been promised. When it says it can do something, it can actually do it, as opposed to some of its competitors.""This is a very stable product."

"It has a lot of stock reports. I believe over 300 canned reports, which for the most part meet a lot of generic needs.""The reporting feature and the Dell's continuous improvement of the solution are the most valuable features. The solution not only supports Dell Power Products but also other products.""It generates very detailed reports, which makes things easier when it comes to IT auditing.""The most valuable aspects of the solution are the compression and the duplication.""This is a stable solution.""The solution is easy to use, flexible and has a lot of out-of-the-box functionality. You can configure the dashboards or you can use a script. However, to fully utilize its capabilities you will want to use a lot of scripts which you will need advanced training. The reports can be customized for many things, such as chargeback billing.""The platform's most valuable features are data protection and retention.""The deduplication is probably the most valuable feature of that requirement."

Cons
"Commvault is a rich system that might scare somebody the first time they see it because it feels so huge.""I would like them to keep working on the new web interface to migrate out of the old interface because the old interface is a bit complex. It was driving customers away because of the complexity. If they migrate everything (100 percent of the features), this would make the product be perfect.""Just to keep it running is time-consuming. There are five people on my team. Commvault was supposed to be one of the less time-consuming solutions, but in reality it takes 60 percent of our time just to keep it running, and that's not even fine-tuning it; that's just to keep it running.""This solution can be complex and difficult to administer because it supports all of the many platforms, so it would help if they could simplify it.""They can improve the VMware recovery and VMware backup. There is an improvement area on the VMware infrastructure. They can make available what they call a VSA proxy. They can have an appliance-type setup to deploy VSA backups and help recover quicker. They can have an appliance ready. Instead of having to have a server dedicated to that and installing software on a server, they can just provide an actual appliance for that.""The price of Commvault HyperScale X could improve.""We've run into some issues when attempting to restore very large numbers of files. Of course, that's more of a design issue.""The pricing of the solution can be improved and made cheaper."

More Commvault Cloud Cons →

"We have encountered issues where we were unable to pull data from the database server. It should also improve the backward compatibility.""It is difficult to manage the solution with the available tools. You need to know exactly what are you are doing.""The solution requires more integration with our other solutions. I know that they have full integration with VMware because it is also from EMC. However, we have to have better integration with Microsoft and Nutanix as well.""It's a bit difficult for first-time users.""The functionality of the Data Protection Advisor is limited and is something that is lacking in this solution. Other solutions like CloudIQ and DDMC provide a much better outlook on how data protection should be done.""The stability of the solution needs improvement for stand alone users.""They should empower their customers with the ability to upgrade this solution as long as it's in the same major release.""Customization of reports or creating new reports can be difficult. Users need to have a deep knowledge of SQL. 70-80% of customers can't seem to understand how to do it. They don't know how to address reporting. If Dell EMC could simplify it, it would benefit the end-user."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."

  • "It's not very expensive — I think the price is fair."
  • "You have to procure the license when you are ordering or quoting for Dell Data Protection Suite (DPS). DPS is bundled with the suite and comes with a license. However, if you purchase NetWorker separately then you will have to procure the license for DPS separately."
  • "For pricing, I would rate Dell 2 out of 5. It's affordable."
  • "You need to make an upfront payment for three, five, or seven years and renew the licenses for support. We can do an annual maintenance contract with Dell. I would rate the product's pricing a six out of ten."
  • "If the customer has huge lineup of Dell Products then they receive discount on the pricing."
  • "The product is affordable."
