Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The reporting system provides real-time insights into the security situation and shows measures that can be taken to protect our data.""One of the most outstanding characteristics of its centralized administration is its great computing power.""The firewall cleverly handles such attacks without compromising on performance.""It's a great solution for management. We can manage a lot at the same time with one security management system. Also, each gateway depends on the other, which is helpful.""The intuitive interface also allows new team members to adapt to the technology if they are not familiar with it initially. It doesn't take much for one to familiarize themselves with the product.""The most valuable feature of Check Point Security Management is the high level of visibility""The Check Point Management server is isolated from security gateways, which means that in case there is an issue, we have our configuration ready and we can directly replace the device and push the configuration.""The product has done a great job in protecting our business network and SCADA systems."

"The most valuable feature of Splunk Cloud Platform is its flexibility and readiness because it's already prebuilt, and everything is click-to-go.""Not having to manage Splunk Cloud's infrastructure is valuable.""For my current requirements, the tool theme seems to be meeting my requirements, from a cost and requirements perspective.""The initial setup was straightforward.""The data management and instant search features are the most valuable ones for us, as they allow us to instantly retrieve information needed for reports and security compliance.""The most valuable feature is we don't have to deal with any back-end server maintenance because the solution is cloud-based.""Splunk Cloud's most valuable features are log aggregations, dashboarding, business management, reporting, and business controls. Additionally, it has awesome indexing and the solution is always improving""Splunk has sped up our response and reduced the time we spend manually monitoring any logs for ticketing tools or servers. It saves us around two hours daily."

Cons
"In order to work management console, you need some good appliance or you need to provide more CPU and Memory to the appliance.""In the future, I would like the platform to be able to integrate or manage appliances or third-party equipment.""In the last version from 80.20, there are some issues around SSNA Diction. I would like this to be improved.""In future releases I'd like to see better integration with other applications and solutions. Also, the cost of the license is too high, it's too expensive.""I like that the Compliance software blade is available for free with the Security Management server purchase, but it is free for only one year - after that you have to buy an additional license to continue using it. I think such an important feature is vital for the management server, and should not be licensed separately.""Check Point's hybrid cloud integration needs significant improvements. These resources need to evolve as data transfers to the cloud increase, so hybrid cloud models are easier to implement. Better hybrid cloud integration would improve how we manage our security logs and provide our administrators with a low-cost solution that enables them to meet all our essential requirements.""The migration from R77 Manager to R80 is a major upgrade. It's not very easy to do. There should be some kind of Wizard for a direct upgrade from the R77 to the R80. There should be an easy way for the customers to do the upgrade.""It would be helpful if the documentation and good practice guides are updated. Many are still from R77."

More Check Point Security Management Cons →

"The pricing model makes the product costly.""There could be better searches, but mainly, it needs to improve the performance with a vast amount of data. That will make it better and easier to use.""Splunk should increase the frequency of new feature releases, particularly those related to real-time operational flow monitoring and analytics reporting.""The search for bulk data needs to be improved. When we were looking for the flow, we had to search really hard. I wanted to request the Splunk team to add some features for better search because getting the flow of the bulk data was sometimes hard.""When one of my customers needs an app, and I am able to find that app on the Splunk base, I have to create a ticket and wait for five days for them to download the app into the cloud environment. That is probably one of the main things. It is painful because I have to wait to get that app in the cloud.""Splunk Cloud Platform needs to be made more user-friendly because it's not user-friendly.""The on-premises version of Splunk includes all the integrations, while the Cloud platform lacks certain integrations and is limited in terms of the number of supported apps.""The Splunk interface is on-premises, so we have limited access to Splunk Cloud. Splunk support is not so good on Splunk Cloud. The Splunk side of the Splunk Cloud should also be more customizable. Integrating Splunk UBA, Splunk Phantom, and Splunk Cloud is also a bit difficult."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Do the homework because Check Point is rather expensive."
  • "This product can be used for 25 security gateways on a basic license."
  • "Check Point is much cheaper than the competition ($4/server as compared to $17/server)."
  • "The solution is expensive and there is an annual license."
  • "Price-wise, it is an expensive solution."
  • "The solution is expensive."
  • "The pricing can be estimated around 3 or 4 out of 10 in terms of expense."

  • "The licensing is based on the amount of data that we send to the cloud on a daily basis."
  • "The price is something that people complain about."
  • "The licensing costs depend on the state of your environment and the fees are paid on a monthly basis."
  • "The pricing model makes this an expensive solution."
  • "There are additional features that you would need to purchase depending on your use case."
  • "The cost of using Splunk Cloud Platform is high, but the value it provides is worth the investment."
  • "I am familiar with the pricing and licensing model a little bit. I am not sure about the particulars of the actual price that we have, but I do like the idea of going towards a more CPU-based approach rather than the ingest approach because it allows us the ability to ingest more data if we need it."
  • "It is a touchy subject because we are locked into it. That goes back to the rehydrating data. We cannot have the retention that we want to store for legal and compliance purposes because that is seven years' worth of data for some of the indexes, so we ship them off into S3 buckets and install them there, at which point they are invisible to Splunk, so we have to rehydrate them, but we cannot rehydrate those pockets into Splunk Cloud. We have to rehydrate them into a self-hosted version of Splunk, which can take days to set up and get going. I would not call Splunk's licensing and pricing predatory, but they have made it very difficult to maintain the independence of your own data."

    Overview

Check Point Security Management is an advanced security management platform for enterprises. The platform integrates all aspects of security. A single platform manages the entire infrastructure, from data centers to private/public cloud deployments.

Check Point Security Management is a reliable and easy-to-use security platform. It integrates all aspects of your security environment to strengthen the security posture without impairing productivity. The system has a layered policy model. This means the security policy can be separated into layers for network segmentation. Different administrators can manage different policies. The policy layer automates the tasks.

The platform is extensible, scalable, and integrates easily with orchestration systems and change management.

    Basic Components of the Infrastructure

    1. Smart Console: The Check Point Graphical User Interface for connecting and managing Security Management Servers. The smart console provides an integrated solution via the following features:

    • Security policy management
    • System health monitoring
    • Multi-domain management

The smart console offers several advantages. Changes in security policies and logs can be done with a click. You can navigate from an item within a log to the policy. There are also built-in multi-language support and accessibility features.

    1. Security Management Server: The server manages security gateways with set security policies and monitors security events on the network.

The automation server is an integrated part of the management server. The API server is active by default on servers with 4 GB of RAM or more and on standalone servers with 8 or more GB of RAM.

The automation server communicates with the management server the same way as the Smart Console. This architecture allows the same validation errors and warnings to be presented when using an automation session.

The same audit logs generated using the Smart Console are also generated using an automation session. If you have a multi-domain environment, there is only one automation server that monitors all the IP addresses of the multi-domain management server.

      2. Security Gateway is placed at the edge of the network. It monitors and filters traffic and enforces security policies.

        Logging, Event management, and Monitoring

With Check Point Security Management, logging, reporting, event management, and monitoring are integrated. The platform features widgets and chart templates that optimize visibility. One of the best features is the one-click exploration. This simplifies going from a general overview to specific event details.

Benefits of Check Point Security Management

        • The platform keeps pace with dynamic network changes
        • Helps align security with business goals
        • Helps with threat prevention.
        • Reduces operational costs

The unified console also means a single policy for users, data, applications, and networks. The granularity control helps accelerate administration processes. This feature, together with automation, is key to achieving reduced operational overhead. Security teams can automate tasks and even create self-service security web portals with the Check Point Security Management platform.

Threat management is fully integrated, with reporting, logging, and monitoring all in one dashboard. This provides full visibility into the security of the network.

        Security Management Suite

The Security Management Suite consists of the following modules:

        • Policy Management: Includes central management of different security policies across multiple domains and browser-based security management.
        • Operations Management: Includes compliance, provisioning, workflow automation, and user directory centralization.
        • Threat Management: Includes centralizing security event correlation for enforcement points. Centrally monitors Check Point devices.

        Reviews from Real Users

A Network Security Engineer/Architect at a tech services company says, "The features we like and find the most valuable are the ways we can manage the policy, create objects, and drag and drop objects in our daily operation. It makes our daily operation on the firewall management much easier than going, for example, to one firewall, then going to the other."

"The management API is the best new feature for me. It allows us to further automate our customers' automated server ordering," says a System Engineer Network & Security at OTTO GmbH & Co KG.

A Senior Infrastructure Services Specialist at St.George Bank Limited adds that "The solution is ideal for use and deployment in a large infrastructure environment."
