We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The backup is the most valuable feature. It also makes storage very easy.""It is very stable.""The most valuable features are that it is able to restore quickly and that it is able to virtually restore on Hyper-V.""Instant recovery is the most valuable feature of Arcserve UDP.""It allows us to back up all the servers and centrally manage them.""The recovery part of the product is very good.""There are many backup options available in this solution. For example, you are able to do backups of servers, email, OST files, and users. This is a complete backup solution which is very good.""Arcserve UDP has a good configuration and user interface. It makes the job of an administrator easy."

"The features I find most helpful in Commvault are its ability to perform incremental backups and significantly reduce backup times for our diverse multi-architecture, multi-environment environment.""It's very easy to set up the storage across all platforms. This allows us to be dynamic and change on-the-fly.""The user interface is very easy to navigate.""One valuable feature is unlimited backup. You can back up existing users and folders.""The solution's stability is excellent.""The initial setup is straightforward.""It is just about as flexible as you can get; simple. You can put it anywhere you want. You can put it on-prem or in your cloud. I could see where a team that's looking for more of a follow the bouncy ball type of solution might get a little confused. "Oh, no. What do you mean I might have to do it this way or I can't do it that way?" Sometimes, people just want to be told what to do. For an enterprise environment, like we are at NDOT, everything we do is not standard. It is not industry standard; it is not normal. We have all kinds of one-offs. We do need flexibility in the solutions that we get. I will say that Metallic has been extremely flexible in that sense, where we are able to follow the bouncy ball if we wanted to. Obviously, we didn't. We did it our way and Metallic, as a whole solution, provided that to us with no issues.""What I find valuable is restoring the complete server. Restoring files is also valuable, but I like restoring the server because you don't have to rebuild a new one."

Cons
"We cannot restore each user's mailbox. Each user's mailbox should be independently restorable. Also, this solution is very slow. If you select all of the servers, it runs for a long time... It needs to be faster. Finally, If anything happens to one server we should be able to switch to another server.""The product is not user-friendly.""It takes much time to verify and consolidate images for backups.""Its interface can be improved. I find it unintuitive.""A lot of their new technologies are not very good.""Arcserve UDP is in the middle range of complexity. The interface can be developed a little bit more to be user-friendly.""The technical support of the product is an area of concern where improvements are required.""The initial setup was complex."

More Arcserve UDP Cons →

"I would like them to keep working on the new web interface to migrate out of the old interface because the old interface is a bit complex. It was driving customers away because of the complexity. If they migrate everything (100 percent of the features), this would make the product be perfect.""The initial installation is straightforward and took approximately two days. However, the process could be more simple.""For simpler environments, they have some templates for startups. Possibly for a smaller environment, they need to do more automatic configuration and selections of users who want to do backups. This is mainly for smaller environments. I would like them to have the same system fit for all environments: small and big environments. Currently, we have to do a lot of configuration of the layout, which takes time. This solution is appropriate for enterprise-level enterprise, but I would like it to be easier to use for SMB environments.""The tool should revise its licensing.""Commvault likes to be ahead of the game when it comes to merging with other platforms, but sometimes it's before they have the solution truly baked in. Office 365 is an example. I feel that my company might be a litmus test for their solution, because we have such a large environment. Some of the promised solutions that we received from Commvault were more like testing solutions. They weren't really validated, meaning they were possibilities. There have been a lot of hot fixes for the solution that we're using right now, more than we expected.""The product is a bit complex.""We had some small issues with the reporting, but that was just a matter of fine-tuning the kinds of messages we receive by email. It was a little overwhelming in the initial configuration. So we reviewed our configuration with our partner and customized the reports so that we only get the important reports. I haven't seen any big issues or things that the solution is missing.""The price of Commvault HyperScale X could improve."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "I do not work with the pricing or licensing issues of the solution for our organization."
  • "We only have the maintenance of three standard UDP licenses. Each license is 50 Euro. There are some additional costs for the storage and software but it has nothing to do with the UDP."
  • "Normally our customers purchase the premium plus license, rather than the standard one, which provides more options."
  • "The price of this product is high and it should be lower."
  • "It is approximately $400 to purchase a virtual service outright."
  • "There is an annual license required for this solution and it is priced well."
  • "Pricing is most likely comparable."
  • "The retail fee is $1300 for a year for one server. Other than that, there is just the cost of your hardware."

  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."
