Helps organization to integrate virtual infrastructure with good analytics of compute storage utilization and reclaimable resources
Pros and Cons
  • "Fewer vulnerabilities have been observed in the four years we have used the solution."
  • "Supporting legacy systems is an area that can be improved."

What is our primary use case?

Dell EMC's storage came with a proprietary solution. I deployed it in-house with Dell CloudIQ and integrated it with the EMC ESRS. Through that, we indirectly reached the cloud solution of IQ. We use this solution to integrate virtual infrastructure, and there are many use cases in the vCenter servers, hypervisors, analytics storage, storage utilization, and reclaimable storage. We primarily use Dell CloudIQ for monitoring and analytical problem identifications.

What is most valuable?

The best thing about Dell CloudIQ is that all storage devices are visible in it, we see firmware and drive versions and a holistic view of storage devices. In addition, there are firmware versions that upgrade their reclaimable storage. So, if there is any faulty part, we can easily view it. However, the only constraint is that it takes ten minutes to sync the changes from on-premises to Dell EMC cloud services.

What needs improvement?

I observed that legacy systems are not supported. For example, the latest Dell EMC Unity series storage is supported, and the pioneer storage of Dell EMC, VNX unfortunately, is not supported on Dell CloudIQ. Also, we have Connectrix switches that are not supported as well with running FOS 7.4.xx versions but Dell CloudIQ supports eight and nine-series FOS, and the switch is the latest because I upgraded in December 2022 which is between 7 Series FOS. It was the maximum I could reach and the legacy hardware is not supported on CloudIQ. Hence, supporting legacy systems is an area that can be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution since the inception of new storage back in 2019, it comes bundled with a new box and deployed Dell Cloud IQ solution. I recently upgraded to version 1.15.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable, and fewer vulnerabilities have been observed in the four years we have used the solution compared to VMware and Veritas. The solution is compact, compressed, and optimized.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution does not have any features to scale up or down. So to scale, you only need to add additional hardware that is supported by the solution. The solution has very limited devices, so the scope of device compatibility needs to be in place for Dell CloudIQ to be more beneficial

How are customer service and support?

We do not have any experience with customer service and support because we have not faced any issues with the solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy, so I don't need to engage local or principal vendors for the deployment. We just download the appliance, integrate it with infrastructure, include VMware center servers, and integrate all storage devices with EMC ESRS, and secure services apply. Deploying the solution for the first time takes approximately forty-five minutes due to the evaluation of use cases and configurations.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented the solution in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution came with proprietary software for storage devices, so there was no cost involved.

What other advice do I have?

I rate the solution an eight out of ten. The solution is good but can be improved by including the UI and adding some dark themes. This will give more clarity on the analytics because dark themes can easily be viewed, concentrated, and more focused on analytics. I recommend the solution for users considering implementing the solution.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Great if you're using Dell equipment but lacks the ability to integrate with other technologies
Pros and Cons
  • "Has really nice roll-up dashboards."
  • "Doesn't do well in terms of integrating with technologies other than Dell."

What is our primary use case?

We are looking for a solution that is good for inventory and health monitoring.

What is most valuable?

This is a valuable solution if you're a complete Dell shop. It's got really nice roll-up dashboards and things like that.

What needs improvement?

CloudIQ doesn't do well in terms of integrating with technologies other than Dell.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been evaluating this solution for a few weeks.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I haven't had any stability issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward and takes a few hours. Maintenance would probably require one or two people.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't know about licensing costs but any agreement would be part of a service contract with Dell.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We're evaluating several solutions but haven't chosen one yet. We're looking for something that encompasses a larger range of vendors and that's not CloudIQ.

What other advice do I have?

This solution would be very helpful for anybody that is solely using Dell equipment. I would currently rate this solution seven out of 10 but that might change once I've had more experience with it.
