Excels in handling unstructured data, helping organizations navigate through different storage systems
Pros and Cons
  • "Pentaho is an analytics platform that can be used when an organization has a lot of big data storage systems already installed and needs to manage and analyze that data. It has a specific use case for unstructured data, such as documents, and needs to be able to search and analyze it."
  • "Deployment is not simple. It is not simple because we are dealing with a lot of data; we are dealing with a lot of storage. So, it's not a simple process."

What is our primary use case?

Pentaho is a BIS(business intelligence system) that is designed to help customers
make decisions based on their data type, size, workflow, use, and importance.

The "Pentaho Data Integration and Analytics" is software made and integrated with different software sets of tools to make it a good alternative BIS.

The customers can create a platform using "Pentaho Data Integration and Analytics" for data integration and analytics.

The Pentaho Data Integration and Analytics platform includes, extract, transform, and load (ETL), big data analytics, visualizations, dashboards, reporting, data mining, and predictive analytics.

Pentaho BIS can be used where an organization has a lot of big data storage systems already installed and needs to manage, visualize, and analyze that data.

It has a specific use case for unstructured data, such as documents, and needs to be able to search and analyze it.

This sometimes happens when customers buy one storage capacity, then upgrade or buy another one to get more capacity, and their organization is full of different types of storage/data. It is very hard to visualize and manage that data.

How has it helped my organization?

Pentaho Business Analytics can significantly improve an organization's IT insite, instead of creating silos of their data, they can manage, analyze and create an overall report using one product. It has a community version and an Enterprise version. Organizations can benefit from it by Increasing their Productivity, Improving Data Pipeline Quality, and faster Data Delivery.

It is a very good replacement for BIS, an organization's needs can be fulfilled by using the community version if they don't have any compliance issues.

What is most valuable?

Pentaho can help organizations by providing them an insight of their unstructured data using one platform(Pentaho Business Analytics).

The features are almost identical to other BIS platforms but to me, customers can benefit as it has a community version with most of its Enterprise features. It also has a free limited-period trial version.

The other feature that I would like to share here is, that users have access to a complete spectrum of data from different sources with the system’s adaptive big data layer, which takes the source of the data into account. The software is built on an open architecture and can be integrated with multiple systems. However, Pentaho Data Integration and Analytics has been acquired by HDS which offers an Enterprise edition for organizations that also need to meet product compliance.

What needs improvement?

The product to me is not as user-friendly as other players in the market.

It also still needs improvement in the reporting module. You will need to search for  deployment examples or need to have a first demonstration to make it ready for your specific needs. The adoption and learning will be another challenge if you are already using other solutions. If that is the case or your challenge then I will recommend buying the Enterprise edition from Hitachi Vantara as full solution with installation, deployment, and migration from your existing product.

For how long have I used the solution?

We are just exploring and selling it as it is new to our customers.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

PBA stability depends on the overall infrastructure and deployment scenario.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is built for scalability and data visualization of a very large namespace.

How are customer service and support?

We need more installations and deployments to share our customers' reviews for "Pentaho Data Integration and Analytics".

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are just exploring it and offering our customers with Hitachi Content Platform (HCP) as a full solution. However, it all depends on customer needs and requirements.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is simple but deployment complicity depends on scalability and features you need.

What about the implementation team?

We are Hitachi Vantara(Providing Pentaho Data Integration and Analytics Enterprise Edition only) Partners, so we are offering as a reseller to our customers.

What was our ROI?

It helps organizations get better business efficiency and ROI in their heterogeneous environment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The organization has both options based on their needs and budget constraints. The Enterprise Edition is expensive with references to an added number of features.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are also offering Oracle OBIEE, but it all depends on the customer's use case and existing setup.

What other advice do I have?

No, not yet any.

Makes it easy to develop data flows and has a wide range of database connections
Pros and Cons
  • "Pentaho Business Analytics' best features include the ease of developing data flows and the wide range of options to connect to databases, including those on the cloud."
  • "Pentaho Business Analytics' user interface is outdated."

What is our primary use case?

I primarily use Pentaho Business Analytics to create ETL processes, monitoring processes, and hierarchies.

What is most valuable?

Pentaho Business Analytics' best features include the ease of developing data flows and the wide range of options to connect to databases, including those on the cloud.

What needs improvement?

Pentaho Business Analytics' user interface is outdated. It's also limited in out-of-the-box features, which forces you to develop features yourself. There are also some problems with having to update metadata manually, which I would like to see Pentaho fix in the future.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Pentaho Business Analytics is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Pentaho Business Analytics is scalable (though I have only tested this lightly).

How are customer service and support?

Since Pentaho Business Analytics is open-source, it has a very helpful community.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously used Microsoft Integration Services and Microsoft Azure Data Factory.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was easy.

What other advice do I have?

Pentaho Business Analytics is a very good product for those starting to work with ETL processes. Usually, it will solve every problem you may have when creating those processes, and it's free, with a big support community. However, it may not be the best choice if your company has a very strong relationship with Microsoft or if you want to work in the cloud. I would give Pentaho Business Analytics a rating of eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
