Entrepreneurs who run small businesses have another reason to smile or keep smiling. However, doesn\'t it seem like other clients will be locked out from using this great product in the making? My reasons entail the fact that the Power BI is designed for compatibility with Azure or Office 365 platforms? There are many businesses across the globe that utilize other platforms other than these two. Does it mean they will be locked out due to compatibility issues? If so, then the platform the Power BI will support will limit its use to some extent, making this a con.

Hi Paul !

It is nice to hear that Microsoft is going to launch yet another BI tool called "Power BI". With soo many tools already available in the market from Microsoft from Performance Point, Power View, Power Pivot, SSRS & Excel sometimes it becomes very difficult as a BI Consultant to convince your client that we will be using all these tools to build a single BI solution.

I hope this new "Power BI" tool will bring all the strength of BI tools which Microsoft has already been delivered. Here are few question which I might ask;

#1: Since "Power BI" is all cloud based, and work on Office 365, does Microsoft ever think about building a BI tool which can be independent of Share Point, Office and other tool. Because my point is when a client purchases license of SQL Server [BI Edition], it should include all the tools that are needing to build End to End BI Solution from ETL to Reporting.

#2: Since new "Power BI" is cloud based, i am sure it is going to work with SQL Azure, what about those clients who have invested huge amount of money and development cost in SQL Server 2012 [BI Edition] for building their BI Solutions. Curious to know will this new "Power BI" will work with SQL Server 2012, Multidimensional Cubes.

#3: Excel is a nice reporting tool for End Users, but when we are talking about building a BI Solution for Enterprise level organizations, how would excel be an efficient tool in handling all the security & performance related issues.

Microsoft should reconsider their approach, by providing a BI tool which can compete with IBM Cognos not with QlikView or Tableau, because QlikView & Tableau are not considered to be as Enterprise Level BI tools. With the idea of being Excel promoted as a BI tool from Microsoft leads me to think they are competing with such tools like QlikView & Tableau.

I am eager to hear your response on this. Lets continue these healthy debates unless Microsoft comes up with some real clarification on this whole situation.

Regards,
